(Press Release) West Palm Beach, Florida (July 13, 2026) — Painter Ralph Coburn (American, (1923 – 2018) first developed his talent surrounded by the Art Deco architecture of South Florida, namely Miami Beach, where the artist was raised.

The Norton Museum of Art will honor that legacy by featuring Coburn as the first artist in its newly launched Florida Roots exhibition series with the exhibition Ralph Coburn: Land, Sea, Sky, open July 25, 2026 – January 3, 2027.

“Nearly a century ago, Ralph Norton recognized that Florida was both a place of great natural beauty as well as a place of cultural possibility,” said Ghislain d’Humières, the Museum’s Kenneth C. Griffin Director and CEO. “This exhibition continues that vision by looking at how South Florida shaped Ralph Coburn’s work — and by reminding us that this region has long played a meaningful role in the creation of art.”
Throughout his practice, Coburn drew inspiration from his physical surroundings, abstracting, compressing, and distilling landscapes into flat, color-blocked planes. Coburn was not alone in finding a muse in Florida — other artists, like John Singer Sargent, Robert Rauschenberg, Laura Woodward and Jane Peterson, were creatively motivated by the Sunshine State, staying for extended periods or moving there permanently. Woodward’s paintings lured Standard Oil and railroad magnate Henry Flagler to move south from St. Augustine to Palm Beach more than 130 years ago, leading to the transformation of South Florida from wilderness to the cultural and financial hub we know today.

As with Coburn, other artists, ranging from Purvis Young and Hernan Bas to Teresita Fernandéz and the Florida Highwaymen artist Alfred Hair, came of age here. With West Palm Beach’s rising national and international profile, it’s a reminder that Florida, and Palm Beach County in particular, also have been a draw for artists for more than a century.

The Florida Roots exhibition series connects the stimulating setting of Florida — with all its defining characteristics, such as intense weather systems, idiosyncratic ideologies, and diverse cultures — to the bucolic landscapes and beachy atmospheres, and to the creative individuals who have been influenced by this distinct state. Through the exhibition series, the Norton will address the potency of Florida on the artistic experience and its greater role as a center for cultural production within the United States.

Coburn, born in Minnesota, spent many of his formative years in Miami Beach and returned frequently throughout his long life. The exhibition’s title, Land, Sea, Sky, references the trisected artworks that evoke the shorelines, oceans, and horizons of Coburn’s travels between South Florida, Boston, New York, and Paris.

In the 1940s and ’50s, Coburn befriended conceptual artists Ellsworth Kelly, Jean Arp, and John Cage, and he developed a radical approach to artmaking that redefined the relationship between artist and viewer. Called participatory art, his paintings and mixed media works invite the viewer to shift their role from passive observer to active participant.

In Coburn’s practice, participatory art means the artist does not work alone; instead, he would invite others to help either create the work’s composition or determine how it is shown. This conceptual approach put Coburn at the forefront of contemporary responses during the rise of abstraction in the mid-20th century.

In 1957, Coburn, who had studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), began a career as a graphic designer in MIT’s Office of Publications, and his art practice took a backseat; his work was kept from view for nearly 60 years. More recently, the artist has slowly begun to gain recognition, first in a 2002 project at Boston University where a few examples of Coburn’s artworks were included in a survey exhibition of Boston artists from the 1940s titled The Visionary Decade.

Over the past two decades, Coburn’s work has been part of several group and solo exhibitions, including The Shape of Abstraction, Boston University Art Gallery, Boston (2010);  Arranged by Choice: The Art of Ralph Coburn, Cape Ann Historical Museum, Gloucester, Massachusetts (2012); Ralph Coburn: Random Sequence, The Arts Club of Chicago (2017); Lost, Loose and Loved: Foreign Artists in Paris, 1944 – 1968, Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid (2018); and museum exhibitions in France and New York in 2021 and 2022.

This exhibition, curated by Arden Sherman, the Norton’s former Glenn W. and Cornelia T. Bailey Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, and Danielle Vaknin, Curatorial Research Associate, includes about two dozen paintings and other works, most of which are on loan from private collections. It also features a model that will allow visitors to arrange compositions in the style of participatory art.

Fans of Stuart's Fantini's Italian Restaurant, featuring New Haven-style Apizza, will be happy to learn about owner Jimmy Fantin's newest venture, Fantini's Fusion Kitchen, just opened in Palm City.

True to its name, it offers diners a diverse mix of Asian and Mediterranean dishes crafted by  Fantini Hospitality Group Executive Chef Sean Camillo, including many Fantini Italian favorites.

One thing you won't find on the menu is Fantin's signature Apizza. A native of New Haven, CT. -- "the Pizza Capital of the United States" (and you thought it was New York, or Chicago, right?) -- Fantin started his career at New Haven's legendary Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, where he learned the art of making the locally named "Apizza."

"A lot of people thought it would be similar to the other Fantini's," said General Manager Mike Vyterna, "but they failed to read the sign on the front of the building: Fantini's Fusion Kitchen. You have multiple flavors from multiple ethnicities from around the world."

He said Chef Camillo has been working on the restaurant's menu since February, which was inspired by his world travels. "You have French flavors, you have Latin flavors, you have Japanese flavors," said Vyterna. "We try and combine a lot of different flavors to complement the food."

The restaurant itself, located at 3208 SW Martin Downs Blvd., combines upscale elegance with friendly, attentive service, and an Art Deco-inspired decor. “I wanted to create something Palm City hasn’t experienced before,” said Fantin in a press release. “A culinary destination with timeless sophistication, our establishment seamlessly blends avant-garde global flavors with the elegance of an Art Deco aesthetic. Every aspect of your evening—from the precision of our modern menu to the choreography of our refined tableside service—is designed to emulate the elite dining experiences found within some of Manhattan’s premier Michelin-starred institutions.”

On a recent visit, Pam and I had an opportunity to try a tasting menu and experience the new dishes first-hand. First up: The F’n Chopped Salad, a delicious confluence of Iceberg, radicchio, banana peppers, heirloom tomatoes, shallots, cucumber and burrata, in a lemon oregano vinaigrette. It was accompanied by Flaherty’s Crispy Brussels Sprouts, which were hands down the best interpretation of Brussels Sprouts I've ever tasted, prepared with Miso yuzu yogurt, applewood bacon, pistachios, maple and aged balsamic glaze. The secret? Chef Camillo told me "it's the miso yogurt."

For entrees, we tried one of their classics, "Statler Breast Chicken Parmesan -- Milanese chicken, pomodoro and warm burrata cheese, while our dining companion had the Veal Chop Marsala, a 10 oz bone-in veal chop with wild mushrooms rosemary marsala jus and crispy shallots. There was also the Spicy Potato Gnocchi Ala Vodka, with hand-made Yukon potato and Nduja vodka sauce. The latter wasn't all that spicy, and the vodka sauce was a great enhancement.

We had two choices for dessert -- Chocolate Panna Cotta Mousse (sea salt hazelnut chocolate crunch) and Limoncello Tres Leches (Limoncello soaked sponge cake and mascarpone whipped cream). Both were as good as they sound, and big enough to share.

Beverage Director Josh Gates was also on hand to showcase a few of his signature cocktails, which included the Cosmo di Bianco, a marvelous combination of the House Limoncello, Triple Sec and White Cranberry Juice, accented with a flower blossom. On a more decadent note, we also enjoyed the F’ing Espresso Martino, featuring Boyd & Blair Coffee Vodka, Grind Espresso Liqueur, Espresso and Chocolate Bitters.

Vyterna, who previous to joining the Fantini Hospitality Group opened the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and was also a sous chef at Bellagio's, outlined what guests can expect when they visit. "Happy Hour will be 3-6 pm every day in the bar; 'Tomahawk Tuesdays' will feature a 28 oz. Tomahawk steak, a bottle of wine and dessert for a set price; Wednesdays we'll have live jazz; Thursdays are Ladies Night, with unaccompanied ladies enjoying Happy hour until closing, Fridays and Saturdays date nights will feature background jazz and Sundays will have Sunday Gravy with Sinatra."

(Press Release) WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Natural Movers Foundation and GroundedWPB will launch the inaugural Banyan Dance Festival, a new week-long celebration of dance taking place August 3-8, 2026, throughout West Palm Beach.

Founded by two Palm Beach County-based arts organizations, Banyan Dance Festival was created through a partnership between Natural Movers Foundation and GroundedWPB. Combining their expertise in arts programming, artist development, dance education, and community engagement, founders Ericka Squire, Natural Movers Foundation, and Branndi Lewis, GroundedWPB, envisioned a festival that would strengthen the local dance ecosystem while elevating Palm Beach County as a destination for dance. 
Designed to strengthen South Florida’s dance ecosystem, the week-long festival brings together professional artists, aspiring dancers, choreographers, and community members through performances, training opportunities, creative development, and public engagement experiences.

“At its core, Banyan is about creating opportunities for artists,” said Ericka Squire, co-founder of Banyan Dance Festival and founder and CEO of Natural Movers Foundation. “As two local arts leaders and passionate advocates for dance, Branndi and I recognized an opportunity to further enrich the cultural landscape of Palm Beach County through a festival dedicated entirely to dance. Palm Beach County is Florida’s Cultural Capital®, and we wanted to create an opportunity for audiences to experience high-quality dance performances while also creating real pathways for dancers and choreographers to train, work, create, and be seen right here in Palm Beach County.”

Festival faculty and featured artists include internationally recognized choreographers and educators Sean Aaron Carmon, Babatunji, and Loni Landon, alongside other local, national, and international artists participating throughout the week.


Festival Programming
Throughout the week, Banyan Dance Festival will offer programming designed to engage artists, dancers, students, and the broader community, including:
  • Young Artist Program (YAP) for dancers ages 9-15
  • Banyan Dance Intensive (Pre-Professional Track) for dancers ages 16-25
  • Banyan Community Class sponsored by the Downtown Development Authority
  • Banyan Silent Disco hosted by Nora District 
  • Banyan Company class and rehearsal observations, artist talkbacks, and behind-the-scenes opportunities for the community to engage with the creative process
  • The Banyan Gala, celebrating the artists, supporters, and creative work developed throughout the week. The Gala kick-offs with a cocktail hour that leads into an intimate performance preview and concludes with a courtyard reception featuring light bites and a social gathering 
  • The Banyan Dance Festival Concert, a dynamic evening featuring world premieres, newly commissioned works, and performances by acclaimed local, national, and international artists

Featured Artists and Creative Development

Resident Choreographer Sean Aaron Carmon, former dancer with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and an internationally recognized performer, educator, and choreographer, will create an original work for the Banyan Dance Company.

Resident Choreographer Babatunji, former company member with Alonzo King LINES Ballet and internationally acclaimed choreographer and educator, will create an original work on the Banyan Dance Ensemble, composed of dancers participating in the Banyan Dance Intensive.

Festival faculty member Loni Landon, a Princess Grace Choreography Fellowship Award Winner, Guggenheim Fellow and NYFA Choreography Finalist, will teach during the festival and create a featured solo work for the Banyan Dance Festival Concert created for a dancer participating in the Banyan Dance Intensive.

The inaugural Banyan Choreography Fellowship has been awarded to Norge Cedeño and Thais Suárez, Cuban choreographers and artistic directors of OTROLADO Dance Company. As the Festival’s first Choreography Fellows, they will travel from Cuba to collaboratively create a newly commissioned work during the Festival.

“Banyan Dance Festival is building something that doesn’t currently exist in South Florida,” said Branndi Lewis, co-founder of Banyan Dance Festival and founder of GroundedWPB. “For years, talented dancers and choreographers have had to leave the region to access the training, creative development, work opportunities and performance opportunities that help sustain a career in dance. Together, GroundedWPB and Natural Movers Foundation have created a platform that expands the local dance ecosystem while investing in artists through paid opportunities, professional training, and a full creative pipeline. Our goal is to position Palm Beach County as a destination for dance while creating meaningful cultural impact, community engagement, and a place where artists can train, create, perform, and thrive.”

(Press Release) West Palm Beach, FL - YMCA of the Palm Beaches has announced that the Florida State Legislature has approved $1.5 million in the State budget for construction costs associated with the Y’s new 55,000 square foot community center, currently under construction at Lake Lytal Park. The grant was sponsored locally by State Senator Mack Bernard and State Representative Anne Gerwig and was signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis.
The State appropriation was granted with recognition of the local support and funding the project has already received. “We are extremely grateful to our legislators for their overwhelming support of this expansive project,” said Timothy Coffield, President and CEO of the YMCA of the Palm Beaches. “This is an important investment in our community’s future, and we are honored that State of Florida has approved funding and we will continue to work with the local community to garner additional support to help make this long-awaited dream a reality.”
 
The Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners has approved a 50-year ground lease to the YMCA of the Palm Beaches, allowing the nonprofit to build a state-of-the-art 55,000 square foot community center and Olympic-style skate park adjacent to the County’s future aquatic facility, also under construction, which the Y will assist in managing.  This historic public-private partnership replicates a successful model, through which other YMCA associations throughout the nation have worked together with municipalities. The new facilities will be centrally located in Palm Beach County at Lake Lytal Park, just off Donald J. Trump Boulevard, and will be a destination recreational facility for thousands of individuals, children and families in Palm Beach County.
 
A hallmark feature of the new YMCA Community Center will be its Youth Engagement and Resource Center, wholly focused on mentoring young people between the ages of 12 and 22. Most of the first floor of the 2-story structure will be dedicated to teens and young adults, and will include a teen center, recording studio, STEM lab, workforce development hub, e-gaming lounge, visual arts studio, and more. Job skills training will include construction trades, food service training, virtual design labs, sound studio technical training, and information technology. A variety of additional services will include mental health, career, and educational counseling.

The 10-ride SMART pass debuts at $239, while the 20-ride is $319 and 40-ride is $359. This equates to rides as low as $9 one-way between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale.
