By Gerry Barker As a freelance travel writer, I take a lot of cruises. And sometimes, in the course of a cruise, you run across something unexpected -- a story within the story, if you will. Such was the case when we recently sailed on Atlas Ocean Voyages' World Navigator. As part of a 10-day voyage around the Caribbean, it featured an independent film festival, showcasing a number of highly-acclaimed documentaries, along with the people who made them. One of those films was "Duty Free." It chronicles what happened when 75-year-old British immigrant Rebecca Danigelis was abruptly fired from her Boston hotel job with little resources to fall back on and few prospects to land another job. What she does have is a son -- Sian-Pierre Regis -- an award-winning journalist and culture critic. Along with providing emotional support, Regis decides to go a step further and direct a film about his mother's struggles. He asks her to create a bucket list of things she would have liked to have done during the 50-plus years she spent raising and caring for her family. She does just that, and the film takes us on their journey. What's on her list? It's wide-ranging, from learning how to hip-hop dance and milking a cow to skydiving and visiting her sister's grave in England. But more than just ticking off items on a wish list, it's also a powerful statement about the plight of America's seniors. Today, Regis and his mother continue to highlight that plight at conferences and political arenas across the country. We got to spend time getting to know both of them on the cruise, and trust me, Rebecca is no where close to slowing down. Do yourself a favor and watch "Duty Free" on PBS Nov. 22 at 10 pm. You can also learn more about the film at its website, HERE.

"The glory of gardening: Hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul." -- Alfred Austin, English poet. As of Nov. 20, it's official: North Palm Beach now has its own Community Garden. This morning, officials with the Village of North Palm Beach met with volunteers at Osborne Park to unveil a new community gardening space. Located at the back of the park, surrounded by white fencing, there are 14 raised, 4 by 10-foot beds where residents can grow plants of their choice. Zak Sherman, director of leisure services, and Andy Lukasik, city manager, were on hand to lead the initial organization meeting. The garden is a project of the village's Environmental Committee, which used the successful Abacoa Community Garden as a model. The new gardening space will be maintained by volunteers, and several of those in attendance signed up to claim a spot in one of the beds. For more information, contact Zak Sherman. Let the growing begin! --By Gerry Barker (PRESS RELEASE)_WEST PALM BEACH – With a bumpy economy and the coronavirus pandemic still looming, one West Palm Beach company wants to make 2021 a year to remember, instead of one to forget. And it’ll do it with the help of some local heroes. In the first of two holiday initiatives, Safebound Moving & Storage is giving away 500 turkeys on Sunday, November 21 at 9 a.m. to feed families in need this Thanksgiving. The drive to bring holiday cheer is a joint effort with the West Palm Beach Police Department and the West Palm Beach Police Athletic League (PAL). In December, Safebound will team up again with PAL to host a Christmas gift drive for at-risk teens in West Palm Beach. “At Safebound, we have a commitment to the community,” said Michael Greco, founder of Safebound Moving & Storage. “The last few years have been hard for everyone, and we want to do whatever we can to ease the burden on families in need this holiday season.” This is Safebound's second year of holiday giving. In 2020, the moving company brought the holidays to six local group homes in West Palm Beach, by providing Christmas trees and presents for all the children. “So many charities face logistical and transportation issues once they've collected items for donations...such as where to store them, how to transport them, and sheer manpower. We have all of those areas covered, and as a local company, we believe that if you have the power to fix something, it’s your responsibility to do so,” added Safebound's human resources manager, Andrew Cain.
