This year’s Literary Society series is hosted by Cynthia Berenson, Penny Blumenstein and Marlene Strauss. The intimate morning breakfast Q&A with esteemed authors offers not only an intimate opportunity to hear straight from prestigious writers, but also an exciting chance for President and CEO of MorseLife Health System Ketih Myers to share updates on activities at the premier senior living facility. To kick off the breakfast, Myers introduced MorseLife board member Eileen Berman to share a few words about her personal experiences with the organization’s award-winning services. ’s Annual Giving Society. And at first, he started with weekly sessions with Robert Holway from Life Enhancement. But maybe even more important, Morse provided care for me. I don’t know how I would’ve managed my anxiety, fear and sadness without the help of Judy Uzzi who does Care Management. She provides me with monthly and as needed counseling because Morse understands that helping the caregiver is really essential to helping the patient. It’s a very lonely disease, but with all the help I’ve gotten from Morse I’m not alone, and I’m so grateful to all of my friends at Morse.”
Berman then introduced Literary Society host Strauss, who set the stage for Towles. Table for Two by Amor Towles features a collection of six short stories and a novella, written over the past 10 years and mostly set in New York around the turn of the Millennium. The collection mostly centers on pivotal moments where life-changing conversations take place between family members or strangers. The novella follows Evelyn Ross from Rules of Civility to Hollywood in 1938, expanded into a richly detailed narrative completed during Towles' stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel. “A short story is very much like the experience of going to a restaurant where you sit down and there’s a couple sitting at the table next to you,” said Towles. “They’re in a hot argument, deep enough into their conversation that they’re not even lowering their voices anymore. You can’t help but overhear! There’s nothing set up; we kind of have to decode the background. And just as we’re beginning to piece it together and start to get into focus - the story’s over. They get up and leave. That means we, as the readers, have the liberty and responsibility to piece together what the meaning of this brief event is in the lives of these characters. The writer and the reader benefit from this kind of literature.” This season’s Literary Society breakfast series will wrap up with one more award-winning author, Colm Tóibín. “We were honored to welcome Amor Towles to this season’s Literary Society series,” said Ashley Robinson, Vice President of Events at MorseLife. “And the addition of Eileen’s personal story really made the morning truly meaningful. Her story was a powerful reminder of the life-changing support MorseLife provides—not just for those facing health challenges, but for their loved ones as well. Eileen’s experience highlights the compassionate care and resources that make a difference in the lives of those we care for every day. Events like these not only bring our community together but also reinforce the vital role MorseLife plays in so many lives.” For over 40 years, MorseLife Health System has been transforming perspectives on aging by designing a dynamic integrated model of residences, healthcare and services to optimize and reaffirm life for older adults at every stage.
