(PRESS RELEASE)_October 17, 2022 (Lake Worth Beach, Fla.) — The Cultural Council for Palm Beach County is bringing a dynamic season of arts, culture and community to The Palm Beaches!

Reflecting the Cultural Council’s mission to champion, engage and grow the arts in Palm Beach County, the Council’s 2022-23 season of exhibitions and events will showcase a spectacular variety of work by local artists at the Council’s downtown Lake Worth Beach headquarters. Opportunities to experience the magic include a full schedule of engaging exhibitions in the Council’s three gallery spaces.

“We are ecstatic to welcome everyone in the community to the Cultural Council to experience our upcoming exhibitions,” said Dave Lawrence, the Council’s president and CEO. “Our new season kicks off with our Main Gallery exhibition ‘Contemporary Art of the Latin American Diaspora’ this fall, an innovative exhibition that highlights works from 24 Palm Beach County artists of Latin American descent. In January, we will present ‘Visualizing Climate Disruption,’ a profound look at the local effects of climate disruption, followed by our highly anticipated ‘2023 Biennial’ that will highlight some of the best artists in the county. We’ll close our Main Gallery season in the spring with our ‘2022 Artist Innovation Fellowship Showcase’ that will showcase new work created by six creative professionals who received fellowships in 2022.”

Twelve other vibrant exhibitions will also be featured throughout the season in the Council’s Solo Gallery and Donald M. Ephraim Family Gallery. Art Talks — or panel discussions with artists and members of the community — will also be offered with each Main Gallery exhibition. All Art Talks are free and open to the public. The Council will also host a series of Culture Talks in partnership with Palm Beach ArtsPaper.

Fall programming highlights include:

Main Gallery: From October 28 to January 14, visitors are invited to experience Contemporary Art of the Latin American Diaspora, highlighting diverse works by 24 local artists from a wide range of Latin American and Hispanic origins. Guest curator Juliana Forero, Ph. D (founder of Nomad Art Projects) has woven a story with the work of artists whose families come from Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Guatemala, and Cuba, among others. This exhibition aims to highlight the range of Latin American experiences by celebrating the art of its people. The exhibition will include didactic materials and opportunities for tours in Spanish and English.

Art Talks: The Council’s new series of Art Talks will feature in-depth panel discussions with visual artists and community leaders about each exhibition in the Council’s Main Gallery. The first Art Talk will be held with Contemporary Art of the Latin American Diaspora curator Juliana Forero, Ph. D, on Nov. 5. Solo Gallery Exhibitions: Celebrate the work of individual artists, starting with Michelle Drummond: Systems, featuring imaginative multi-dimensional sculptures made of colorful yarn by Delray Beach artist Michelle Drummond now through December 2. Next up is an exhibition of artist David Rubinson’s mesmerizing computer-generated work from December 9 through January 21.

Exhibitions in the Donald M. Ephraim Family Gallery: This fall, visitors can take in Pattern and Process, a juried exhibition presented in collaboration with Women in the Visual Arts and currently on display through November 12, followed by an exhibition of work by multimedia artist Gabino A. Castelán — one of two artists from Palm Beach County to earn a 2022-2023 grant from the South Florida Cultural Consortium — from November 18 through December 31.

Palm Beach ArtsPaper Culture Talks: Palm Beach ArtsPaper, a publication founded in 2008 by a group of Palm Beach County-based arts journalists, will host their first-ever discussion series at the Cultural Council this season. Sessions include talks with Andrew Kato, producing artistic director and chief executive of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, in conversation with Hap Erstein on (October 29), and David Walker, general and artistic director of Palm Beach Opera, in conversation with Greg Stepanich (December 3). Exhibition: Contemporary Art of the Latin American Diaspora -- October 28, 2022 – January 14, 2023
This exhibition will highlight diverse works by more than 20 local artists from a wide range of Latin American and Hispanic origins. Guest curator Juliana Forero (founder of Nomad Art Projects) has woven a story with the work of artists whose families come from Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Guatemala, and Cuba, among others. Forero found that both unified and diverging themes emerged from which she has developed a narrative of the peoples’ crossing, sharing and protecting their unique heritage. This exhibition aims to highlight the range of Latin American experiences by celebrating the art of its people. The exhibition will include didactic materials and opportunities for tours in Spanish and English. Exhibition: Visualizing Climate Disruption — January 27 – April 8, 2023
Palm Beach County artists are uniquely positioned to observe the effects of climate disruption, as Florida is on the front lines of sea level rise, climbing temperatures, catastrophic storms, devastation of coral reefs, and disappearing seagrasses. This exhibition, with more than 40 works by 15 exceptional artists, will explore the effects of climate disruption and engage audiences in considering topics such as endangered species, shrinking habitats, pollution, and coastal resiliency. Artists hope to work with scientists to create interactive materials and educational programming that reaches and inspires broad audiences of all ages. Exhibition: Biennial 2023 — April 21 – June 24, 2023
Presented every two years, the Cultural Council’s Biennial is a highly anticipated exhibition highlighting some of the best artists in Palm Beach County. A juried show, Biennial 2023 will feature more than 30 artists across varied mediums, including video, painting, mixed-media, photography and sculpture. Come and experience the diversity and breadth of creativity of artists living and working in this incredible cultural community. Associate Curator of African American Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts and writer Juana Williams will serve as the guest curator for this exhibition. Cash prizes will be awarded for Best of Show, Second Place and Third Place, as well as a People’s Choice award. Exhibition: 2022 Artist Innovation Fellowship Showcase — July 20 – September 9, 2023
The Cultural Council created the Artist Innovation Fellowship Program in 2020 for artists across all disciplines in order to honor and support the creative individuals who form the core of Palm Beach County’s cultural sector. The Artist Innovation Fellowship Program expanded to include funding for six $7,500 fellowships in 2022 to the following creative professionals: Elizabeth Dimon, actor (West Palm Beach), Kianga Jinaki, visual artist (Riviera Beach), Henriett Michel, visual artist (Palm Beach Gardens), Yvette Norwood-Tiger, musician (Wellington), Shanique Scott, choreographer (South Bay) and Carin Wagner, visual artist (Palm Beach Gardens), who is also one of two 2022-2023 South Florida Cultural Consortium grantees for Palm Beach County. During this exhibition, these six Artist Innovation Fellows will showcase new work made possible by the program. Exhibition: Michelle Drummond: Systems — October 14 – December 3, 2022
Delray Beach artist Michelle Drummond works with various weights and colors of yarn to build three-dimensional forms on and off the canvas or panel. Drummond incorporates her fiber with acrylic painted surfaces to create whimsical narratives of strength, perseverance, and optimism. Her new piece Restless (2022) is a reference to the drive to pursue the opportunities needed to achieve goals and aspirations. It is a visual representation of the mind constantly churning, assessing, and questioning as well as a vision of thoughts translated into action. These and other philosophical ideas are the foundation of Drummond’s work in this series of Systems. Exhibition: David Rubinson — December 9, 2022 – January 21, 2023
David Rubinson’s computer generated work is informed by mandalas, Islamic architecture, sacred geometry, and ornamentation traditionally connected to transcendental experiences and expanded consciousness. The videos and still images are a synthesis of these forms with an overarching aesthetic grounded in symmetry, pattern, and cadence. His intention in all his work is to create a more expansive, inspired, and sacred space. Molly Aubry’s work explores entangled perceptual worlds through print media. Mining the tension between organic materials and digital processes, the work imagines artifacts from a world in which the natural and artificial are inextricably linked. Etheard Joseph paints large-scale, expressive works in vibrant colors that convey his emotions, thoughts, and dreams. Using his own lexicon of shapes and colors, he works to communicate through abstract images in order to allow the viewer room to enter and engage with the work. Exhibition: Gerald K. Stone — May 5 – June 17, 2023
Gerald Stone’s assemblage works pay homage to the renowned artist Louise Nevelson. Stone incorporates wooden toy blocks, boxes, and trays; fragments of discarded furniture and scrap lumber; as well as other found objects into coherent works of art. The work provides an opportunity to reincarnate detritus as objects of contemplation. Sarah Knouse is a sculptor, designer, and arts educator. Through her artmaking practice, she explores themes of ornamentation and superficial grandeur as they occur at a domestic scale. Her mixed media sculptures often combine notions of quotidian household surroundings with those of the ephemeral and surreal. Each work in this juried exhibition is either pattern or process oriented. Pattern refers to the visual arrangement of elements in some kind of sequence or repetition. Process refers to the method of making the work a prominent aspect of the completed work; so that the work’s subject is the making of the piece. Presented in collaboration with Women in the Visual Arts, this free public exhibition will take place at the Donald M. Exhibition: Gabino Castelán: 2022-2023 South Florida Cultural Consortium Grantee for Palm Beach County — November 18 – December 31, 2022
Gabino A. Castelán is a multimedia artist working in painting, drawing, installation, and sculpture. Castelán draws on memories and literature and incorporates themes of presence and absence in his work. His fragmented compositions attempt to capture surreal natural forms and use them as metaphors to interpret the conflicts and desires of human experience. Exhibition: Serge Strosberg: Veni, Vidi, Vici — January 6 – February 18, 2023
This exhibition is an exploration of the life and influence of Henry Morrison Flagler. Drawing from vintage images provided by the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum and the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, Serge Strosberg connects both the man and his remaining monuments to the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Exhibition: The Power of Portraits — February 24 – April 8, 2023
Palm Beach County photographers explore portraiture in this exhibition. A collaboration with Palm Beach Photographic Centre, renowned portrait photographer Vincent Versace will choose signal images in a variety of photographic styles to demonstrate the wide range of personal representation in current portraiture. In honor of the International Art Deco Society’s 16th world congress in Miami, Florida, the Cultural Council showcases Palm Beach County artists whose work connects to the aesthetic of Art Deco. Exhibition: 2023 Dina Baker Award for Mature Female Recipient — June 2 – July 15, 2023
The Council’s Dina Baker Fund for Mature Female Artists was established in 2015 thanks to the generosity of philanthropist and local artist Dina Baker. The fund is intended to help stabilize and strengthen the careers of female artists 60 years of age or older who reside and work in Palm Beach County, who have recognizable artistic merit and who are deserving of financial assistance (whether professional, personal, or both) to enable them to further their artistic development and achievement. The 2023 recipient will be selected later this fall and her work will be featured in this exhibition. This free public exhibition will take place at the Donald M.
