George Abbott Award Recipient Named

(Press Release) (South Florida – May 12, 2026) Gary Schweikhart, president of the Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s Theater & Arts Honors, today announced the recipient of this year’s prestigious, community-nominated George Abbott Award. It will be presented at the 49th annual Carbonell Awards Ceremony on Monday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m. at FAU’s University Theatre in Boca Raton.

The George Abbott Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts
Honoring an individual (or team) who has contributed significantly to the artistic and cultural development of the region. The award may be given for accomplishments within the year, or for a lifetime.
 
Stuart Meltzer
Founding Artistic Director, Zoetic Stage
A recipient of 20+ Carbonell nominations and eight actual awards (seven as director, one as playwright), Stuart Meltzer has long been a transformative force in South Florida’s theatre community. First, as Artistic Director for City Theatre in Miami, and since 2010 as the Founding Artistic Director of Zoetic Stage, he has built one of the region’s most artistically ambitious and critically acclaimed companies from the ground up. His work as a director is defined by bold vision, emotional intelligence, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, and his inventive storytelling highlights humor, humanity, and compassion. He was named Best Director in Miami by the Miami New Times and has been honored with multiple Silver Palm Awards.
 
Meltzer is not only a gifted artist but a generous mentor and collaborator. He has nurtured generations of local talent and created a home for artists to grow, take risks, and thrive. His productions have garnered wide recognition, but his true impact lies in the community he has built and the standards he has raised for what theatre can be in this region. In addition, he has frequently served as producer/director for the annual Carbonell Awards ceremony. For his artistry, leadership, and lasting and ongoing contribution to South Florida’s cultural life, Stuart Meltzer has richly earned the 2026 George Abbott Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts.

Note: At the glittery ceremony this November, the 2026 George Abbott Award will be officially presented to Stuart Meltzer by his husband, playwright/actor/director Michael McKeever, who received the same award in 2019.

Carbonell Special Awards & Ceremony 2025
The Carbonell Awards will soon solicit nominations from members of South Florida’s theatre community for up to six additional Special Awards, including the new Christine Dolen Award for Outstanding Debut. The Carbonell Board of Directors will select and begin announcing the recipients of these awards in August. In September, the Board will announce this year’s 120 Carbonell Award finalists in 20 competitive categories based on accumulated scores from the nonprofit organization’s pool of nearly 50 experienced and diverse volunteer judges—with seven judges assigned to each show.
 
This season’s Carbonell Awards will be presented at a glittery ceremony on November 16 that is South Florida’s version of Broadway’s Tony Awards®. The event is being produced and directed by Andrew Kato, Producing Artistic Director/Chief Executive of the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, with the award-winning Caryl Fantel serving as Music Director. Tickets for the ceremony and after party are only $45 and will go on public sale in mid-October.
