Gero Set for Wild Ocean Science Event

(Press Release) ​Jupiter, Florida (March 18, 2026) – The Wild Dolphin Project proudly announces Dr. Shane Gero as this year’s featured presenter during its 8th Annual Wild Ocean Science event. The non-profit’s signature fundraiser takes place Sunday, March 29, 2026 at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.

In 2005, Dr. Gero founded the Dominica Sperm Whale Project, an innovative and integrative long-term behavioral study of sperm whales in the Eastern Caribbean. He documents the social and vocal behavior of over 20 sperm whale units. Through thousands of hours of observation, he has come to know the whales as different individuals, as brothers and sisters, as mothers and babysitters, and as a community of families, each with their own way of doing things, living together in the Caribbean Sea. Dr. Gero is also the Biology Lead for Project CETI, a non-profit organization and TED Audacious Project applying advanced machine learning and gentle robotics to decipher sperm whale communication. His pioneering research on sperm whale communication and culture serves as a cornerstone for the James Cameron-directed, Emmy-winning Disney+ documentary series, “Secrets of the Whales.” He has also spoken for National Geographic and TEDx stages and his writing has appeared in The New York Times.
 
Wild Ocean Science, the annual fundraiser for the Jupiter, Florida-based non-profit research organization The Wild Dolphin Project, will be hosted by PBS NewsHour correspondent and journalist, Miles O’Brien, and Research Director and Founder of The Wild Dolphin Project, Dr. Denise Herzing.
