LECTURES ArtSpeaks | Rhiannon Paget – 6 p.m. Friday, June 5. Dazzling East and West: Japanese Acrobats and the Making of a Transnational Japanese Spectacle. Rhiannon Paget, Curator of Asian Art at the John & Mabel Ringling Museum of Art, introduces the career and transnational impact of Hayatake Torakichi. Woodblock prints by artists including Utagawa Yoshitora and Utagawa Kunisada II reveal how the Hayatake troupe fused elite theatrical traditions, folklore, and popular spectacle into visually dynamic acts that balanced familiarity and novelty. Rachel Gustafson, Chief Curatorial Officer, for a talk that examines the history and origins of the Norton’s Recognition of Art by Women (RAW) exhibition series. We’ll also explore the latest research on the state-of-the-art world for women artists and look closer at the emotionally resonant paintings of Danielle Mckinney, the 10th artist to be honored through the RAW program. CLASSES Family Studio | Portraits and Perspectives – 11 a.m.-12:20 p.m. or 1-2:20 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 20, and 27. Celebrate the art of storytelling as we explore how artists capture people, personality, and imagination through portraiture. This month, we’ll look closely at portraits in The Norton’s Collection or in the student exhibition, Portrait Mode: Self-Reflections from Past, Present, and Future. Inspired by the faces and stories we encounter, families will create their own portrait-inspired artwork that reflects what makes each person unique. Children ages 5 – 12, and their accompanying grown-ups, participate in a 15-minute spotlight tour, followed by a related art workshop. Each weekend is a new experience. Space is limited; online registration required. This is a free program. Family Autism Art Workshop – 1-2 p.m. (K-6th grade) and 3-4 p.m. (7th-12th grade) Sunday, June 7. This program is for children with autism and their families, and includes interactive time in the galleries, an art workshop, free admission to the Museum, and autism supports. All participating staff members are trained to lead programs for people with autism. Space is limited; online registration required. This is a free program. Adult Sketch Class – 1-3 p.m. Monday, June 8. Join Teaching Artist Shannon Walker in the galleries and experience the Norton’s Collection through sketching. Receive guidance to improve your drawing skills as you engage with works of art and build community with other local artists. Various drawing principles and techniques will be addressed. Bring your own sketchbook (size limit of 11 x 14 inches) and pencils only. Space is limited; online registration required. Cost: $40 per person/members $20. Mindful Moments – Noon Monday, June 22.
