LECTURES AND CONVERSATIONS Mini Course: Light, Art, and Installation with Dr. Nathan Timpano – Continues 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. June 5 and June 12. This three-lecture series explores light art sculptures, installation art, and international precursors to the California Light and Space Movement in relation to the Norton's special exhibition Laddie John Dill: Eastern Standard Time. In addition to examining Dill's works, the mini-course reviews art produced by the Uruguayan-Argentinian art group MADÍ, Dan Flavin, Dorothy and Mel Tanner, and James Turrell, among others. Cost: $30 each day or $80 series/ Members $25 each day or $60 series (includes Museum admission). Artist Talk: A Conversation with Artist Lee Chun-yi – 6-7 p.m. Friday, June 6 (virtual). Lee Chun-yi will join virtually to discuss Heart Sutra Landscape, on view in Art of the Word. Space is limited; online registration required. Rachel Gustafson, Chief Curatorial Operations and Research Officer, and co-curator of the special exhibition Artists’ Jewelry: From Cubism to Pop, the Diane Venet Collection, addresses the relationships between artist-made jewelry and larger scale works in diverse media for which the artists are better-known. ART CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS Family Studio: Roots and Rhythms – 11 a.m.-12:20 p.m. or 1-2:20 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 21, 28. Celebrate the richness of heritage and culture as we explore the powerful rhythms that flow through art and music. Inspired by artworks that reflect diverse cultural roots, families will create their own art, reflecting the beats and traditions that shape their lives. Children ages 5 – 12, and their accompanying grown-ups, participate in a 15-minute spotlight tour, followed by a related art workshop. Each weekend is a new experience. Art with the Armory Jewelry Making Workshop: Niki de Saint Phalle – 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 21. In collaboration with the Armory Art Center and in celebration of Artists' Jewelry: From Cubism to Pop, the Diane Venet Collection, create your own handmade charm inspired by Niki de Saint Phalle’s sculptures and jewelry. Learn to cut, texture, stamp, enamel, or polish brass or silver. No experience necessary. Begin the class at 10 a.m. with a Spotlight Tour at the Norton, then travel to the Armory for the workshop at 10:45 am. Armory Art Center, 811 Park Place. All skill levels welcome. Ages 16+. Space is limited; online registration required. Cost: $100 per person / $90 Members SPECIAL EVENTS Juneteenth Community Celebration – 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 14. This intergenerational event celebrates freedom and spotlights the African American experience with live musical performances, dance, gallery talks on art by African American artists, storytelling, and art-making activities. Free admission and parking. Sensory-Friendly Sunday – 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, June 22. A morning of fun for people with sensory needs and their families. Enjoy art, music, art activities, and a quiet room. The Museum is open exclusively from 10 – 11 am for visitors with sensory needs and their families. Families are welcome to stay and participate in activities once the Museum opens to the public at 11 am. Event registration is required. Registration for the Sensory-Friendly Sunday opens one month in advance.
