Music Camp (Morikami Museum and Gardens)

(Press Release) Delray Beach, FL – Step into a world of culture and discovery at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, where a curated lineup of monthly programming brings the richness of Japanese traditions to life through immersive tea ceremonies, hands-on workshops, expert lectures, and more. 
 
June workshops, classes, and demonstrations:

Thursdays, June 4, 18  
Sado: Tea Ceremony 
Time: Beginners - 10:15am – 12:15pm   
           Intermediate - 1pm – 3pm  
Cost: $60 (Morikami Members $55) Advance Registration Required  
Expand upon your knowledge of Japanese tea ceremony in this hands-on class. Perform traditional Japanese tea ceremony, with its ever-evolving seasonal subtleties, in the authentic Seishin-an Tea House under the guidance of instructor Yoshiko Hardick. The tea ceremony changes from month to month and from season to season. Intermediate course requires approval by the instructor before registering.

Saturday, June 6 & 20   
Nerikomi Ceramic Workshop 
(2-day workshop)  
Time: 10am – 12:30pm  
Cost: $150   
Nerikomi is a hand-building pattern technique made with colored clay, by mixing colored clay and then press it together. “Neri” means to mix, and “komi” means to press. The clay is layered in different patterns to create a block of clay. After, you slice the block into thin layers. Finally, you make a pattern in a repetitive (or abstract) way from these slices to create different objects. In this workshop students will learn in the first class to create a patterned block of two colors of clay. The second class will be dedicated to cut the slabs and transform them into nice trays, plates or vessels.  
  
Saturday, June 6  
Tea Ceremony 
Time: 1pm – 3pm  
Cost: $60 
The workshop teaches the basics of sadō – The Way of Tea - necessary to understand the aesthetics of sadō and to fully enjoy the tea ceremony itself. Participants become familiar with how to be a guest, how to make a bowl of tea, and serve it.   
   
Monday, June 22– Friday, June 26  
Youth Music and Culture Summer Camp  
Time: 9am – 4pm  
Cost: $295 
For grades 3rd – 12th   
Campers will be immersed in Japanese culture participating in fun craft activities, Japanese cultural arts and exciting music classes which include the 13-string koto (zither) and taiko drums, taught by professional musicians and members from the Fushu Daiko Taiko group. All materials and Instruments that campers need are provided for their use at camp. The program will allow students to have both practical and knowledge-based (theoretical/ historical) classes all while having fun learning.  
  
Saturday, June 27 – Sunday, June 28  
Guest Artist Koto Music Workshop 
(2-day workshop)  
Time: 9:30am – 12:30pm (Grade 6-12th and Adult Beginners) and 1:30pm – 4:30pm (intermediate)  
Cost: $200 
The program is aimed at beginners, those with no or little experience with the koto and intermediate students. Workshops are taught by visiting musician Shirley Muramoto, koto teacher.
