Kravis Hosting African American Film Festival

2/3/2026

Picture
(Press Release) West Palm Beach, Fla. (February 2, 2026) – Founded in 2006 by the late James Drayton, a former West Palm Beach city commissioner and strong advocate for equal rights and equality, the 20th Annual African American Film Festival (AAFF) returns to the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts on February 19 - 22. Curated by author and film scholar Dr. Terri Francis and moderated by a dynamic group of nationally renowned filmmakers and local community leaders, the event takes place in the Kravis Center’s Marshall E. Rinker Sr.  Playhouse.

Dr. Francis and her special guests take attendees on a cinematic journey with unforgettable sports and dance films by extraordinary filmmakers. This year’s African American Film Festival mixes immersive documentaries, recent romantic dramas and classic black-and-white movies. Saluting dancers’ athleticism and praising the finesse athletes bring to the game, DANCE LIKE A BUTTERFLY, STING LIKE A BEE showcases heroic stories that might have been overlooked and spotlights films starring some of the greatest dancers and athletes of all time.

The festival lineup includes:

Rinker Playhouse

Klein highlights key moments in Muhammad Ali’s career, showcasing the people, events and media frenzy surrounding his rise. The first half, in black and white, depicts Cassius Clay winning the World Heavyweight Championship against Sonny Liston in 1964 and becoming Muhammad Ali after joining the Nation of Islam. The second half, in color, occurs ten years later in Kinshasa as Ali attempts to regain his title against George Foreman after being stripped for refusing military service. Ali’s evolution into a politicized cultural icon is narrated through interactions with fans, Malcolm X, and observations of changing cultural landscapes in the USA and Mobutu’s Zaire.

“Princesse Tam Tam,” directed by Edmond Gréville and starring Josephine Baker, is a musical comedy with an exotic twist on the Pygmalion story. It follows Max de Mirecourt, a frustrated French novelist who travels to Tunisia for inspiration, leaving his socialite wife Lucie in Paris. There, he meets Alwina (Baker), a free-spirited shepherdess. Captivated by her, Max decides to make her the subject of his novel, transforming her into a sophisticated lady and introducing her as “Princess Tam Tam” from India to spark jealousy in Lucie. His plan backfires when Alwina becomes a sensation in Parisian society. The film showcases Baker’s comedic and musical talents through captivating dance scenes and two songs: “Dream Ship” and “‘Neath the Tropical Blue Skies.”
