Flower arranging, ikebana, is a traditional Japanese art form spanning centuries. Ikebana has various different schools of study, each with unique philosophies and aesthetics. Dating back to the 15th century, the Ikenobo School is the oldest and most traditional. Students in this course learn the basic principles and style of Ikenobo, creating fresh flower arrangements each week to take home and enjoy. The idea is that ikebana can be done by anyone, anywhere, with almost anything. Saturday, March 7 & 21 Kurinuki Ceramic Workshop (2-day workshop) Time: Day 1: 10:00am – 1:00pm Day 2: 10:00am – 12:00pm Cost: $150 Kurinuki is a traditional Japanese ceramic hand building technique starting with a solid block of clay and hollowing it out to create a vessel. Create a chawan, Japanese tea bowl using this beautiful ancient technique. In this hands-on workshop, learn basic techniques to work with clay and enjoy a presentation of Japanese ceramics. Perform a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, with its ever-evolving seasonal subtleties, in the authentic Seishin-an Tea House under the guidance of instructor Yoshiko Hardick. The tea ceremony changes from month to month and from season to season. The intermediate course requires approval by the instructor before registering. *Sunday Beginner’s II Class Prerequisite - You must have already taken a Thursday beginner’s I class session or a workshop to attend Sunday classes. Saturday, March 14 Shibori Indigo - Scarf Time: 10am – 3pm Cost: $75 Advance Registration Required The use of indigo dye, or aizome, has a long and cherished history in Japan. The deep blue colors for which Japanese textiles are celebrated come from the leaves of the tade ai, a plant introduced to Japan from China in the sixth century. Shibori is a Japanese technique of manual resist dyeing used to make patterns on fabrics. Learn various shibori techniques and cook in style by making your own shibori apron to wear. Saturday, March 14 Sado: The Way of Tea Time: 12pm or 1:30pm Cost: $5 with paid museum admission. Observe Japanese sadō, an ever-changing demonstration rich in seasonal subtleties. Your involvement in the true spirit of sadō — harmony (wa), reverence (kei), purity (sei), tranquility (jaku) — along with a sip of matcha green tea and a sweet will help you bring a calm perspective into your busy life. Sunday, March 15 Basics of Sushi Time: 1pm – 3pm Cost: $150 Advance Registration Required Sushi has entered the American palate as a cultural influence from Japan. But do you know what sushi is? Few know that sushi is not actually raw fish, but rice made with a bit of vinegar and sugar. Served with a variety of accompaniments, cooked or raw fish and vegetables, it can take many forms. Participants in this hands-on workshop, led by Mitsutoshi Sekita, sushi chef from a Japanese restaurant in Plantation, Florida, will learn cultural information about sushi, how to make sushi, and, of course, enjoy eating the sushi. Thursday, March 19 Karesansui: Raking Demonstration Time: 10:30am Cost: FREE with paid museum admission. No Reservation Required Karesansui or dry landscape garden, is founded on Zen ideology using carefully composed rock arrangements and gravel or sand. A karesansui is carefully raked to represent characteristics of water such as currents and waves while boulder arrangements may be interpreted as islands. Learn about our Late Rock Garden and observe how the raking can be a practice in mindfulness and meditation. Saturday, March 21 Japanese Poetry Workshop Cost: $35 Time: 11:00am – 1:00pm (Advance registration required) In this workshop, participants will learn about haiku building with an overview of the classic masters of haiku, as well as a look into how haiku has evolved to present times. Join poet Yaddyra Peralta in this hands-on workshop and learn to write your own original haiku using Morikami's own Japanese gardens as your inspiration. Sundays, March 22 & 29 The Art of Bonsai – Advanced Studio Session Time: 9am – 12pm, break, 12:30pm – 3:30pm Cost: $200 (Morikami Members $190) Advance Registration Required Bonsai means "a tree in a tray." The art of bonsai creates the illusion of age and maturity of a tree which has developed and sustained the effects of nature for many years. This is an advanced course for bonsai students with prior experience and must have instructor approval for registering. Prerequisite – Participants need to have their own plant, materials, tools and supplies. Friday, March 27 Butoh Dance Performance Time: 7:00pm Cost: $20 (Members $15) Butoh, a type of Japanese dance theater came on the scene in 1959 and over the decades has grown beyond Japan and onto the international scene. Join us for an evening of this unique Avant-garde dance performed by Butoh performer Pinar Sinka. Pinar Sinka is a Butoh performer, curator of the Tokyo Space Dance and the founder and artistic director of PIArtButoh (the first Butoh organization in South Florida). PIArtButoh is an established organization in the Butoh dance world, bridging the gap between international and local art disciplines, perspectives and contributing to the growth and evolution of the Butoh art form on a global scale. Sinka was trained by Japanese Butoh masters Yukio Waguri, Yoshito Ohno, Tetsuro Fukuhara and other celebrated Butoh performers in Japan and Malaysia. Since 2013, she has been performing in Butoh projects and offering Butoh workshops and seminars. Sunday, March 29 The Way of Taiko - The Heartbeat of Japan Time: 11am – 1pm or 2pm – 4pm Cost: $70 Advance Registration Required This workshop introduces participants to the history and practice of taiko drumming. Participants are taught how to understand sounds and movements, i.e., how to connect nature and the meaning of body movement. They will become familiar with the way of taiko and its drumming techniques. Top performers from South Florida's Fushu Daiko will conduct the workshop. The group is recognized by Seiichi Tanaka, the master of San Francisco Taiko Dojo, who brought taiko to the United States and who trained senior members of the Fushu Daiko group. Tuesdays, March 31 Taiko Class Time: Adults - 2:30pm – 3:30pm Grade 3-12 - 4pm – 5pm Cost: $135 (Morikami Members $130) Advance Registration Required Taiko is a Japanese word, which means a Japanese drumming style, a drum group, drum music and a drum itself. There are a wide variety of shapes and sizes of taiko. Learn about the history, culture, and techniques of how to play this exquisite instrument in this 5-week course.
