Light and Space artist Laddie John Dill will discuss his new immersive argon and neon installation, EST (Eastern Standard Time), as well as his six-decade-long career as a pioneer in the Light and Space movement, with Arden Sherman, Glenn W. and Cornelia T. Artist Talk: A Conversation with Penelope Umbrico – 6 p.m. Friday, May 16. Artist Penelope Umbrico’s installations, video, and digital media works utilize photo-sharing and consumer-toconsumer websites (eBay, Craigslist, Flickr) as an expansive archive to explore the production and consumption of images. Join Umbrico and Lauren Richman, Ph.D., William and Sarah Ross Soter Senior Curator of Photography, for a conversation about the appropriation and digital distortion of found images. Her work, Mountains, Moving: Of Dr. George C. Poundstone, 1926-2013 is currently on view in the special exhibition Blur / Obscure / Distort: Photography and Perception. Join Glenn Tomlinson, William Randolph Hearst Chief Officer of Learning and Community Engagement, for a conversation about Ryan’s massive sculpture, exploring its rich associations with nature, technology, and ourselves. Light, Art, and Installation with Dr. Nathan Timpano – 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursdays, May 29, June 5, and June 12. Mini Course: This three-lecture series explores light art sculptures, installation art, and international precursors to the California Light and Space Movement in relation to the Norton's special exhibition Laddie John Dill: Eastern Standard Time. In addition to examining Dill's works, the mini-course reviews art produced by the Uruguayan-Argentinian art group MADÍ, Dan Flavin, Dorothy and Mel Tanner, and James Turrell, among others. Cost: $30 each day or $80 series/ Members $25 each day or $60 series (includes Museum Admission). SPECIAL PERFORMANCE The Angel and The Devil: Music of the French Baroque – 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18. Celebrate the music of Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray, composers known as masters of the viola da gamba. Mik Groninger performs on the ancient instrument, which originated in 15th century Spain and is of a distinctly different family from the violin, which originated in Italy. Cost: $35 (includes Museum Admission)/ Members $15. ART CLASSES & WORKSHOPS Art with the Armory Jewelry Making Workshop: Calder – 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10. In collaboration with the Armory Art Center and in celebration of Artists' Jewelry: From Cubism to Pop, the Diane Venet Collection, create your own cuff bracelet inspired by Alexander Calder’s beautiful sculptures and jewelry. Students will learn to hammer, texture, and form brass to make their own unique handmade creations. Begin the class at 10 am with a Spotlight Tour at the Norton and then travel to the Armory for the workshop at 10:45 a.m. Armory Art Center, 811 Park Place, West Palm Beach. All skill levels welcome.
