(PRESS RELEASE)_Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens June workshops, classes, and demonstrations:

Thursdays, June 3, 10, 17
Sumi-e Ink Painting (Floral, Beginner)
Time: Floral – 10:30am – 12:30pm 
Cost: $45 (Morikami Members $41). Advance Registration Required.


Sumi-e is a form of Japanese ink painting brought from China in the 12th century. Primarily done in black ink, sumi-e means, "charcoal drawing" in Japanese. Students grind their own ink using an ink stick and a grinding stone and learn to hold and utilize brushes to create primary brushstrokes. Floral and landscape classes will start with a review of the basic techniques before moving on to the main subject. 

Fridays, June 4, 11, 18, 25

Expand upon your knowledge of Japanese tea ceremony in this hands-on class. Perform traditional Japanese tea ceremony, with its ever-evolving seasonal subtleties, in the authentic Seishin-an Tea House under the guidance of instructor Yoshiko Hardick. The tea ceremony changes from month to month and season to season.

Sundays, June 6, 13
Sado: Tea Ceremony (Intermediate)
Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Cost: $55 (Morikami Members $50). Advance Registration Required.

Saturday, June 12
Sado Tea Ceremony
Time: 1pm – 3pm
Cost: $40. Advance Registration Required.


The workshop teaches the basics and aesthetics of sadō – The Way of Tea – necessary to understand the tea ceremony aesthetics and to fully enjoy the tea ceremony itself. Participants become familiar with how to be a guest, as well as learn how to prepare and serve tea.

Saturday, June 12
Morikami Film Series: Blade of the Immortal
Sponsored by The Rubens Family Foundation
Time: 11am and 2pm (In Japanese, subtitled in English); (140min., 2017, Rated R)
Cost: $5 with paid museum admission (children ages 3 and under free)


Blade of the Immortal is a 2017 samurai film starring Takuya Kimura and Hana Sugisaki and directed by Takashi Miike. The narrative focuses on the curse immortal samurai Manji, a highly skilled samurai in feudal Japan who promises to help a young woman avenge the death of her parents. Their mission leads them into bloody battles with a ruthless warrior and his band of master swordsmen.

Sunday, June 20
Family Fun: Koma
Time: 12pm – 3pm
Cost: FREE for members or with paid museum admission. No Reservation Required.


Celebrate Father’s Day with your favorite Superman at the Morikami. Customize your very own koma, a Japanese wooden spinning top. Learn about Japan’s rich history of this game and how these toys can be rigged for epic battles.

Monday, June 21 – Friday, June 25
Youth Music and Culture Summer Camp
Sponsored by Batchelor Foundation and Toshiba International Foundation
Time: 9am – 4pm
Cost: $250. Advance Registration Required.
Grades 3rd – 12th 


Campers will be immersed in Japanese culture participating in fun craft activities, Japanese cultural arts and exciting music classes, which include the 13-string koto (zither) and taiko drums, taught by professional musicians Joseph Amato and members from the Fushu Daiko Taiko group. All materials and instruments are provided by the museum. The program will allow students to have both practical and knowledge-based (theoretical/ historical) classes all while having fun learning. 

Due to COVID-19, all programming is subject to change. Always check the website for updates and/or cancellations. 

Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is located at 4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach.
