By Gerry Barker North Palm Beach Life The Kravis Center's cabaret series, 54 Below at the Rinker, continued last night with a performance by Bianca Marroquin, not only a versatile singer, dancer and actor, but also the first Mexican woman to headline a Broadway show, playing Roxie Hart in "Chicago" (and one of the few who has also played the character of Velma as well). Accompanied by her musical director, Tom Gallaher, she took the audience on a musical journey of her 20-plus year career and life, beginning at age 3 when she already knew her future would be performing. It's evident even today that same youthful enthusiasm and love for her craft burns bright. Ms. Marroquin injected humor and heart-felt emotion into songs that hold personal meaning for her, as well as audience favorites like "All That Jazz," "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Life Is a Cabaret." The latter is appropriate for the setting, as the Rinker Playhouse has been given the supper club vibe of New York's 54 Below, who has partnered with Kravis for the series. Besides tables that offered guests an up close and personal theater experience, you could also purchase light bites, wine and beverages. While Ms. Marroquin's talents were on full display, the show was uneven in a few spots and could benefit from some extra rehearsal. She'll be back for a second show Friday night, and will no doubt give it her all. That's how she rolls.
