(Press Release) West Palm Beach, Fla. (September 25, 2024) – The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is pleased to announce the return of its annual KRAVIS CENTER BLOCK PARTY. Guests are invited to celebrate the vibrant tapestry of our community with FREE live performances, interactive workshops and activities for ALL AGES. Immerse yourself in a day of creativity, connection, food and fun for the whole family! On Saturday, October 26 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Kravis Center will present over a dozen FREE performances and activities. The event is rain or shine – taking place indoors and outdoors on the Kravis Center campus. The exciting lineup features celebrated local and international artists, culminating with a FREE headline concert at 6:30 p.m. in Dreyfoos Hall by Grammy-nominated reggae-fusion band, THIRD WORLD.
“Last year, the hundreds and hundreds of visitors to our inaugural block party highlighted the profound impact of the arts on our community,” said Diane Quinn, CEO of the Kravis Center. “We are excited to welcome everyone back to sing along with their friends, join a drum circle, and dance to their favorite band. All are welcome at the KRAVIS CENTER BLOCK PARTY to preview the upcoming seasons of Ballet Palm Beach and Palm Beach Opera, and join in on a lively sing-along with the Young Singers of the Palm Beaches. Select your soundtrack and dance the day away at our Silent Disco, or dive into the eclectic sounds of DJ Le Spam’s impressive vinyl collection. Don’t forget to savor delicious bites from our fantastic local food trucks as you soak in all the excitement! Experience the joy of hands-on learning at the Palm Beach Symphony Instrument Petting Zoo, where you can explore various instruments. Get involved in creating a traditional Latin-American Alfombra installation, and unleash your inner comedian at the Improvisation/Sketch Comedy Workshop. Feel the beat in the African Drum Workshop, or delight your little ones with a Soundstory for Kids. There’s also a variety of crafts, games, and a sensory lounge provided by Rhythm & Hues, ensuring fun for all ages! Born in Montreal, and raised in London and Bogota, he was exposed to a variety of music and cultures from an early age. His expansive collection includes Latin, Funk, Haitian, Jazz, and more. He began digging for records as he toured the world as the guitar player for Capitol recording artist Nil Lara and continued adding when he formed and toured extensively with his own band, Spam Allstars. Learn more about Rhythm & Hues at rhythmandhues.com. 1:15-1:45pm GIMELSTOB BALLROOM MODERN MAYA “ALFOMBRA” (SAWDUST CARPET) WORKSHOP A tradition created in Europe and now practiced in Antigua Guatemala, alfombras de asserín (also known as sawdust carpets) are crafted by local artisans during Holy Week to welcome Easter. These carpets are created by using dyed sawdust, flowers, leaves, fruits and other natural elements to create a temporary, unique work of art. Jose R. and Chuy Mendez invite you to keep the tradition alive by creating a “Modern Maya” sawdust carpet at the Kravis Center Block Party. During the workshop, the Mendez brothers will provide instructions on how to use all these materials to join in on the action of designing a custom carpet that will be on display throughout the day. 1:20-1:45pm DREYFOOS HALL MAINSTAGE BALLET PALM BEACH Join Palm Beach County’s professional ballet company as they present a collection of dances from its upcoming 2024-2025 season at the Kravis Center. Amy and Matthew Joy are experienced music educators in Florida. Amy teaches at Loxahatchee Groves Elementary and is also the Music Director at Palms West Presbyterian Church. A lifelong musician, she holds a Bachelor of Music from FSU and a diploma from Berklee College of Music. Matthew, a graduate of Berklee College with a Master’s from Middle Tennessee State, specializes in Jazz Composition. He has over 20 years of teaching experience, including positions at Tennessee State University and Florida Atlantic University. Currently, he teaches at Binks Forest Elementary and maintains a private guitar studio. Low Ground is heavily influenced by Bluegrass, Swing, Folk, Rock, Blues, Jazz and Jam. Since their formation in June of 2020 Low Ground has already made leeway within the Florida music scene. Telmary has graced stages all over Europe, South America, and Japan at some of the world’s most renowned jazz and popular music festivals. After seven years in Toronto, Canada, she returned to Havana where she formed her band Habanasana. Her album, Libre, was awarded the 2014 Cubadisco Prize for best Hip-Hop recording.
