Top Load Expandable Trunk By GERRY BARKER North Palm Beach Life Photos Courtesy of Arlo Skye Recently, an email arrived inviting me to "test drive" a new piece of Arlo Skye luggage. Intrigued, I set about learning more. Founded in 2016 by former executives of luxury brands Louis Vuitton and TUMI, who spent "a collective 23 years working on luxury products and travel goods," it quickly gained recognition for offering top quality "at a fraction of the price," and was voted the Number One Carry-On by Condé Nast Traveler. Their newest offering is the "Large Top Load Expandable Trunk," touted as ideal for anyone going on a cruise. Since Pam and I would soon be boarding MSC Grandiosa for a week in the Caribbean, the timing was perfect. I ordered one in their signature color, champagne, which arrived within days. After removing it from its cotton storage cover, the first thing to say is I loved the color. It's almost too pretty to be subjected to the bumps and bruises to which bags in transit are subject. But having said that, they are constructed with just that in mind, using "German Makrolon polycarbonate shells" -- described as "high-performance, lightweight, and exceptionally durable, known for extreme impact resistance." It's another way of saying to baggage handlers, "give it your best shot." The top is secured by two "FreeFlex" zippers -- "specialized, elasticized technology" -- that allows the bag to expand by as much as two inches "for overpackers." And that would be us, thank you very much. I release the zippers from the TSA-approved lock and open the lid, much like a top-load washer. Inside is a full grain, leather name tag, a laundry bag, two shoe bags and a removeable compression divider panel. It looks roomy, but I had to wonder: Would the top load design hold what I normally pack in my traditional "clamshell" bag? I didn't have to wait long to find out, since it was soon time to pack for our cruise. To cut to the chase, the answer is a resounding "yes." In fact, it held not only my clothes, toiletries and shoes, but also some of Pam's spillover items. Specifically designed for smaller spaces, it was easy to unpack in our ship's stateroom as well. As a bonus, you could even use it for extra storage if you run short of closet space. Another feature I liked was the ease of moving it around. Employing "ultra-quiet, Japanese Hinomoto ball-bearing swivel wheels," it's 360-degree, Silent-Run Dual wheel system glided effortlessly through the port terminal and the long gangways leading into the ship. Additionally of note: -- It weighs 10.5 pounds -- Capacity: 110 L regular or 125 L expanded -- Antimicrobial lining, tear-resistant fabric with upgraded tensile strength -- 3-Stage telescopic handle with ergonomic grip Whether you travel occasionally, or often, your choice of luggage is maybe your most important accessory (Pam's shoes and attire not withstanding). On our future trips, you can be sure my Arlo Skye will be joining me. Find out more at the Arlo Skye website.
