There are new cameras on the highways and by-ways of North Palm Beach, but don't bother smiling when you go past.
It's your license plate, not you, these cameras will be snapping.
Called LPR cameras (License Plate Recognition), they are widely used by police departments around the country to help solve crimes and catch the bad guys.
"We deployed them here this year," said Captain Angela Dallesandro of the North Palm Beach police. "All the officers are trained on how to utilize them."
Currently, Dallesandro noted there are four cameras deployed -- two at one stationary location and two mobile units that can be set up in the field wherever needed. More stationary cameras will be added in the future.
Photos of license plates are captured by the cameras as the cars pass and run through a database. Any match to someone wanted in connection to a crime is reported, verified and checked.
The mobile cameras are effective for monitoring particular routes a suspect may be traveled, Dallesandro said.
One thing she stressed is "these cameras are not out there to write tickets. They are there to help us locate suspect vehicles."
