(Press Release) JUPITER, FL — Executive pastry chef Denise Elrod of Blackbird Modern Asian has a sweet spot for Mother’s Day. “The holiday venerates the noble profession of motherhood and I really love that,” says Denise, who gave birth to her son two years before winning Guy’s Dessert Games on The Food Network. Shortly after, she and her husband Levi welcomed twin daughters. “My most precious memories were seeing my babies for the first time.” This year, the renowned chocolatier collaborated with sous chef Najah Pettiford to create a fiery finale tempered with a sentimental twist. “We wanted something nostalgic but still beautiful,” she says of the toasted s’more ($15) crafted with raspberry mung bean marshmallows, cinnamon graham crackers, milk chocolate ganache, and raspberry agar sauce. “Each layer uses mostly French techniques and is assembled to order.” When the dessert arrives, it’s set on a lazy Susan then torched. Next, a halo of chocolate tuile decorated with edible flowers, gold leaf, Maldon salt, and sesame brittle is placed on top. The s’more’s residual heat makes it velvety soft and easy to cut with a fork. Every mother will also enjoy a complimentary glass of champagne upon arrival. The glamorous enclave will not be featuring a holiday menu or dinner specials, but there are plenty of Pan-Asian dishes to placate mom and her clan beneath the outstretched limbs of a cherry blossom tree, in the shadow of a 16-foot golden Buddha, or in an antechamber whose soaring ceiling is bedecked with inverted white umbrellas.
These include Chinese barbecue sticky beef short ribs ($20, 3 pieces) served in a “smoking” glass cloche; a whole Peking duck accompanied with Chinese pancakes, Beijing garnish, and Chinatown hoisin sauce ($95, serves 2-4); lo mein noodles topped with huge chunks of garlic King crab and xo sauce ($48); and miso black cod served with baby bok choy and sizzling soy sauce vinaigrette ($45). Before digging in, toast mom with a cocktail from the mixologist-driven drink menu like The Blackbird, an eponymous tipple crafted from Skyy vodka, Amaro Lucano, cold brew, vanilla cream, and activated charcoal in the shape of a bird and complemented with a fortuitous chocolate fortune cookie ($15, or $7.50 during happy hour) or the Modern Fashioned ($16, or $8 during happy hour) made with Misunderstood ginger spiced whiskey, Skrewball peanut butter whiskey, and angostura bitters and a garnish of toasted marshmallow and strawberry. Blackbird opens daily for dinner at 4 p.m. Entertainment and a live DJ are featured on Friday and Saturday evenings from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. The restaurant hosts a daily happy hour menu with half-priced cocktails, wine, and beer on Monday from 4 p.m. until close and Tuesday through Sunday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Reservations will be accepted for tables of 8 or larger based on availability. Walk-ins and seating commence at 4 p.m. Blackbird is located at 1511 N. Old Dixie Highway, Jupiter, FL 33469. For more information, visit blackbirdmodernasian.com or call 561-589-7505.
