About Us

Brian Wilson - ready for Croquet

• Brian and Maureen (Mo) have been together for over 20 years - married for 14 years.
• We live in a small village called Shaw, just 20 minutes from the beautiful Georgian city of Bath (pictured above)
• Mo's family comes from the south of England; mine comes from the Yorkshire in the North.
• If you have ever seen "All Creatures Great and Small" (a film about Yorkshire Vetinrary Surgeons) you'll know the countryside - actually we knew the real characters in these stories.
• Our passions are music (we sing with 3 choirs and join in lots of tours), croquet {we both play and are deeply involved in Croquet administration, going on holidays, gardening (we have a lovely garden and I have a separate piece of land where I grow vegetables and soft fruit). | am a beekeeper and go hunting.
• We are both retired and thank heavens, do not look or act our age!

Mo in Sicily

• Mo was a teacher and I have had an eventful career: Teacher, went into industry, qualified as an Accountant, roles in Production, Quality Control and Purchasing - then into Management Consultancy (company turnaround), back into Higher Education, then Management Consultancy, this tme in Competitive Funding (helping clients to get money then helping them tp spend it!!}
• Mo has relatives in New York State -- the family moved to the USA just after World War 2.

BATH

​Bath is a fantastic city – the city full of Georgian Architecture and Roman Baths – Mo and I are so lucky to live so close to this beautiful World Heritage Site.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE

CROQUET

Mo and I play croquet – almost 4 times/week, plus competitions - life can be hectic!! I’d like to introduce you to the fascinating sport of croquet and show how "6 hoops, 4 balls, 2 mallets and 1 lawn" can bring USA and the UK together.

SRI LANKA

You may have traffic problems with too many cars, bad drivers, or even a spot of bad weather (I understand that the odd storm does hit Florida – that’s a bit of British understatement – we know it can be very bad!!) However, have you ever had problems with elephants? They do in Sri Lanka. Have I got your attention? Let me tell you about our trip to this wonderful island – the Pearl in the Indian Ocean. GO TO THE ARTICLE.

SIGIRIYA - THE LION ROCK

There are so many sights that you must see in Sri Lanka – that Pearl in the Indian Ocean  - but one must be Sigiriya or the Lion Rock. It is impossible to describe the stupendous site of Sigiriya – you can see it for miles around as it rises 600 feet above the green jungle and rice paddy fields. THE U.S. EMBASSY IN LONDON

What was unique about the "old" USA embassy in London? I’m taking about the site at Grosvenor Square, not the new one at Nine Elms London. After WW2, the USA wanted to build a new embassy and bring all the activities under one roof. They sited on Grosvenor Square. The Duke of Westminster’s family had owned the land for hundreds of years, so the USA Ambassador met up with the Duke to buy the land.

There was only one problem – and it was a big one – the Duke’s family had one rule: "We do not sell land; we will lease it."
