Italy, Polynesia in Florida
By Georgina Cruz
Special to North Palm Beach Life Polynesia and Italy right here in Florida? Oh, yes! This year, with the pandemic waning but still around with occasional new variants and international snap lockdowns here and there, we wanted to enjoy getaways closer to home like we did in 2021. Since we were saving a bundle on international flights, we decided to splurge on luxury accommodations. READ MORE. |

Special to North Palm Beach Life If there is something my husband Humberto and I have learned well during the past two years of pandemic it is, without a doubt, that our health and wellness should be our top priority. But, of course, living in our busy modern world, often time to devote to our fitness and well-being is short. We wanted to do more this fall for our physical and mental health. Like the ancient Romans who stressed mens sana in corpore sano (a healthy mind in a healthy body, a saying attributed to the poet Juvenal) we wanted a vacation that would provide both a change of scenery as well as relaxation and healthy pursuits. So, we looked for a resort getaway with a top-notch spa, lush landscapes, a lake and/or water features, strong health protocols and safe activities. READ MORE. |
Escape to the Wilderness at Disney World
To say that the last year has been challenging to a travel aficionado is a colossal understatement. My husband Humberto and I, accustomed to taking several cruises and land trips each year, were desperate for a change of scenery. This spring we found the perfect solution: we rented a Wilderness Cabin for four nights at the Fort Wilderness Campground in Disney World in Orlando. We found we were not alone –with lots of neighbors in the cabins surrounding ours. READ MORE. |

While most people who take the Empire State Road Trip are already Northeast residents, we start out from the Palm Beaches, a mere 1,322 miles from our first destination, the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel in the small village of Celoron, NY. From there we'll continue on to the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel and finish at the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel, courtesy of the Harbor Hotel Group. This is our first real trip since the COVID pandemic locked us down, and we're super excited to be back on the road. READ MORE. |
School is finally out. So what's next? For Cate, it's a trip with us, her grandparents, to experience New York City. We'll get there on Amtrak's Silver Meteor, leaving West Palm Beach and arriving at Penn Station in New York a little over 24 hours later. We have two sleeping compartments, one for me and one for Pam and Cate. Tickets? Check. Bags packed? Check. Okay -- let's go! SEE MORE. |
Trip to the KeysFLORIDA KEYS_ For people like us, who love to travel, the last six months have -- what's the word? -- sucked. Of course, throwing caution to the wind and potentially getting COVID-19 would suck even worse. So we have stayed put and spent lots of time looking at our photos from previous trips. Until now. Yellowstone National Park has, for most of my life, been my favorite place to relax, sightsee, hike, and just in general, unwind. However, my favorite areas in Yellowstone are those out-of-the-way, little-known destinations bypassed by the usual Yellowstone visitor. I do love geyser-watching, photographing and watching the wildlife, just like the typical tourist; but anyone who thinks that Yellowstone is crowded should try to get a little more off the beaten path. They will be rewarded with a new Yellowstone, mostly located just a few hundred yards from the most popular sights.

There are a lot of differences between ocean cruising and river cruising.
Ocean cruising usually means you're traveling with lots of people, sometimes as many as 6,000 or more on today's megaships. Your days are programmed from morning to midnight -- there's always something going on. Shore excursions are optional, and pricey. Personal service is lacking, unless you pay a premium. But our river cruise, on Vantage Deluxe World Travel's Ms River Splendor, was just the opposite. Total passengers were less than 200, including 46 staffers. We programmed our own day. Shore tours at every stop came with our cruise. And best of all, Vantage took care of everything, from pickup at the airport to arranging the tours to getting us back home. READ MORE. |

Is there a better way to see everything our wonderful country has to offer than a good, old-fashioned road trip? While we love all forms of travel -- train, ship, airplane (though not as much with all the cramped quarters and security lines) -- road trips have always had a special place in our hearts. Most of us live in our comfort zones, only grudgingly getting out if necessity demands it. As we age, we dread those times when we have to do something unfamiliar. At 70, my wife and I were planning a two-week trip to the Philippines. We’ve never done anything remotely like this before. Before this trip, I had never been outside of the United States – other than a short trip over the border into Canada or Mexico.

"Wow." That was the initial reaction by Cate, our 5-year-old granddaughter, to seeing the Grand Celebration for the first time.
She could hardly contain her excitement as we prepared to board at the Port of Palm Beach. This was Cate's first cruise, and she couldn't wait to be on the ship. (We had already talked about how this was a ship, not a boat).

At first, before the move, I made fun of the town we were moving to, Cornville. Cornville Arizona! I started off saying “we live just outside of Sedona”. That sounded more mystic and trendy. Even when you read about Senator John McCain’s ranch, news would never say Cornville. But that’s exactly where McCain’s ranch is, Cornville, just like me.

Located in the Southern Cascade mountain range in Oregon is a park with the deepest lake in the United States. Crater Lake is almost 2,000 feet deep, and the park gave us an interesting time in the two full days we spent there. Crater Lake National Park has its central attraction – the lake itself – in the center of the park. The round lake is about 6 miles long by about 5 miles wide, with a surface area of about 20 square miles. A loop road circles the lake and presents the visitor with beautiful views of the lake or the surrounding countryside. The raw beauty of this lake is this park’s primary drawing. READ MORE.

Call us crazy, but when we travel to New York, we take the train.
We admit it's not for everybody. Like if you have an important business meeting you don't want to miss. Or have to get from Point A to Point B by the fastest means possible. In either case, it's probably not for you.
But if you have the time to spare, want to relax while someone else does the driving, like to see this great country up close and personal, want to meet interesting people along the way -- Amtrak may just be the ticket.

A CRUISE ON THE AZAMARA QUEST. The size is just right if you seek a more intimate, personalized setting for your cruise vacation. You can pretty much get to any place you want to go in short order. It isn’t adults only; children are certainly welcome. But it clearly caters to adults, which is a positive for several we spoke with. As noted earlier, there was one child on this voyage and outside the pool and ice cream, not a whole lot kids would find interesting.
