Italy, Polynesia in Florida
By Georgina Cruz
Special to North Palm Beach Life Polynesia and Italy right here in Florida? Oh, yes! This year, with the pandemic waning but still around with occasional new variants and international snap lockdowns here and there, we wanted to enjoy getaways closer to home like we did in 2021. Since we were saving a bundle on international flights, we decided to splurge on luxury accommodations. READ MORE. |

Special to North Palm Beach Life If there is something my husband Humberto and I have learned well during the past two years of pandemic it is, without a doubt, that our health and wellness should be our top priority. But, of course, living in our busy modern world, often time to devote to our fitness and well-being is short. We wanted to do more this fall for our physical and mental health. Like the ancient Romans who stressed mens sana in corpore sano (a healthy mind in a healthy body, a saying attributed to the poet Juvenal) we wanted a vacation that would provide both a change of scenery as well as relaxation and healthy pursuits. So, we looked for a resort getaway with a top-notch spa, lush landscapes, a lake and/or water features, strong health protocols and safe activities. READ MORE. |
October was a milestone month for us: The month we got back to cruising. And what a cruise it was -- 10 days on a brand new ship from a new cruise line -- Atlas Ocean Voyages' World Navigator. Our cruise would begin in St. Maarten and end in Barbados. We were both excited and cautious, wondering what travel would entail in this time of COVID. Only one way to find out. So me packed our bags, vaccine cards, negative test results and headed for Miami International. Follow along in our day-by-day diary which ran on ALL THINGS CRUISE, with the new addition of photo slide shows and video on the places we visited. All aboard! READ MORE

Escape to the Wilderness at Disney World
To say that the last year has been challenging to a travel aficionado is a colossal understatement. My husband Humberto and I, accustomed to taking several cruises and land trips each year, were desperate for a change of scenery. This spring we found the perfect solution: we rented a Wilderness Cabin for four nights at the Fort Wilderness Campground in Disney World in Orlando. We found we were not alone –with lots of neighbors in the cabins surrounding ours. READ MORE. |

While most people who take the Empire State Road Trip are already Northeast residents, we start out from the Palm Beaches, a mere 1,322 miles from our first destination, the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel in the small village of Celoron, NY. From there we'll continue on to the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel and finish at the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel, courtesy of the Harbor Hotel Group. This is our first real trip since the COVID pandemic locked us down, and we're super excited to be back on the road. READ MORE. |
School is finally out. So what's next? For Cate, it's a trip with us, her grandparents, to experience New York City. We'll get there on Amtrak's Silver Meteor, leaving West Palm Beach and arriving at Penn Station in New York a little over 24 hours later. We have two sleeping compartments, one for me and one for Pam and Cate. Tickets? Check. Bags packed? Check. Okay -- let's go! SEE MORE. |
Trip to the KeysFLORIDA KEYS_ For people like us, who love to travel, the last six months have -- what's the word? -- sucked. Of course, throwing caution to the wind and potentially getting COVID-19 would suck even worse. So we have stayed put and spent lots of time looking at our photos from previous trips. Until now. Yellowstone National Park has, for most of my life, been my favorite place to relax, sightsee, hike, and just in general, unwind. However, my favorite areas in Yellowstone are those out-of-the-way, little-known destinations bypassed by the usual Yellowstone visitor. I do love geyser-watching, photographing and watching the wildlife, just like the typical tourist; but anyone who thinks that Yellowstone is crowded should try to get a little more off the beaten path. They will be rewarded with a new Yellowstone, mostly located just a few hundred yards from the most popular sights.

With COVID-19 still wreaking havoc, traveling for pleasure has ground to a halt for most of us. And yes, not to put too fine a point on it -- it sucks. Regardless, and desperate for a change of scene, Pam and I ventured out one recent Sunday for a picnic, and decided we would try some place we haven't been. That place turned out to be Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound. READ MORE. |

There are all kinds of ways to celebrate the holiday season: Visit loved ones; throw parties; attend special events. For us, we like to cruise.
This year, we had the special opportunity to take the "Haute Caribbean Holidays" cruise on Crystal Serenity -- seven ports in 15 days over Christmas and New Year's, sailing round-trip from Miami. You can read a detailed account of our trip in our DAILY DIARY on All Things Cruise. In the meantime, come along and share our adventures in these photo pages. All aboard!! READ MORE. |
MIAMI BEACH_Preparing for a recent cruise from the Port of Miami, we wanted to find a hotel in the area where we could chill and relax the night before. We found it -- the COMO Metropolitan Miami Beach. For starters, we're big fans of art deco, and this hotel originally opened in 1939 as the Traymore, designed by renowed art deco architect Albert Anis. A lot of its charm and heritage has been retained in Italian designer Paola Navone's remodel, with a color scheme that gives it a contemporary flair.

There are a lot of differences between ocean cruising and river cruising.
Ocean cruising usually means you're traveling with lots of people, sometimes as many as 6,000 or more on today's megaships. Your days are programmed from morning to midnight -- there's always something going on. Shore excursions are optional, and pricey. Personal service is lacking, unless you pay a premium. But our river cruise, on Vantage Deluxe World Travel's Ms River Splendor, was just the opposite. Total passengers were less than 200, including 46 staffers. We programmed our own day. Shore tours at every stop came with our cruise. And best of all, Vantage took care of everything, from pickup at the airport to arranging the tours to getting us back home. READ MORE. |
JENSEN BEACH_Looking for a local staycation, or just a relaxing beach getaway at an affordable price? For residents of the Palm Beaches, you can find both less than an hour's drive north at the Hutchinson Shores Resort and Spa.

Smooth Sailing on MSC SeasideAs veteran cruisers, it's always exciting to experience a new ship, and a new brand, for the first time. So Pam and I were looking forward to our first voyage on MSC, taking MSC Seaside from the Port of Miami.
MSC, well-established in Europe and South America, is looking to capture the American market with big, shiny new ships like Seaside, the first in its Seaside Class, which launched in late 2017. Sister ship Seaview debuted in 2018, with two more planned for 2021 and 2023. The company also showcased a new, state-of-the-art terminal coming to Port Miami at SeaTrade last month. |

KEY WEST_Head south until you run out of road and you'll find yourself in Key West, an island of some four square miles, 150 miles or so from Miami and 90 miles from Cuba.
While it's a scenic drive, we arrived by ship on the Carnival Victory. Key West was our first stop on a 4-night cruise, roundtrip from Miami. Earlier in the month, one of the Key West ports was knocked out of commission for three months when a cruise ship hit a mooring after a gust of wind. Lucky for us, Carnival uses a different port. Most of us live in our comfort zones, only grudgingly getting out if necessity demands it. As we age, we dread those times when we have to do something unfamiliar. At 70, my wife and I were planning a two-week trip to the Philippines. We’ve never done anything remotely like this before. Before this trip, I had never been outside of the United States – other than a short trip over the border into Canada or Mexico.

Fun was in abundance as Carnival execs, media, travel agents and guests prepared for a two-night debut voyage to the Bahamas. Horizon was officially launched in April, and after a season in Europe, came to New York before arriving in Miami. To make room, Carnival redeployed her sister ship, Vista, to Galveston. Located in the Southern Cascade mountain range in Oregon is a park with the deepest lake in the United States. Crater Lake is almost 2,000 feet deep, and the park gave us an interesting time in the two full days we spent there. Crater Lake National Park has its central attraction – the lake itself – in the center of the park. The round lake is about 6 miles long by about 5 miles wide, with a surface area of about 20 square miles. A loop road circles the lake and presents the visitor with beautiful views of the lake or the surrounding countryside. The raw beauty of this lake is this park’s primary drawing. READ MORE.

MELBOURNE BEACH_ We were on a mission: Find an ocean-front getaway that was not too far and pet-friendly. Sounds easy. It wasn't. Our first stop was Google. Google led us to TripAdvisor. And TripAdvisor led us to ... the Ocean Pines Motel in Melbourne Beach.
Located on S. Highway A1A, it's definitely old-school Florida: A tourist court with six, kitchen-equipped, one and two-bedroom units. But what it may lack in pizazz it more than makes up in friendly and inviting. And the location is a knockout -- mere steps away from one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida.

Hiking in Bear Country
When you hike a trail in Yellowstone or Glacier National Park, you may need to share your trail with indigenous park wildlife. The wildlife that causes the greatest concern for most hikers is charismatic megafauna. This modern term includes deer, elk, moose, bison and bear. Of these species, the two that cause the most concern and outright consternation are Ursus Arctos Horriblilis, the grizzly bear, or Ursus americanus, the American black bear.

Call us crazy, but when we travel to New York, we take the train.
We admit it's not for everybody. Like if you have an important business meeting you don't want to miss. Or have to get from Point A to Point B by the fastest means possible. In either case, it's probably not for you.
But if you have the time to spare, want to relax while someone else does the driving, like to see this great country up close and personal, want to meet interesting people along the way -- Amtrak may just be the ticket.

BAKERY
NEW YORK -- My love of cupcakes goes back to the days of my mother making them from the recipe printed on the back of the Hershey's Cocoa box.
Not only did she bother making cupcakes from scratch, she whipped-up Minute Fudge Frosting to top them.
I still use that frosting recipe, mostly for brownies, and it takes longer than a minute. Yes, you boil it for a minute, then you let it rest, then you beat it to the perfect consistency. If you miss that critical point in the process, the frosting will either be too sticky to harden, or gets too hard to enjoy.
All this brings me to Magnolia Bakery in New York City.
