'The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its
net of wonder forever.' -- Jacques Yves Cousteau
Located near Florida Power & Light Company’s (FPL) Riviera Beach Next Generation Clean Energy Center, Manatee Lagoon is both a seasonal sanctuary for the "gentle giants of the sea" and a learning center.
Visitors are invited to "test their knowledge of science and nature, and learn how the production of electric energy allows manatees to survive chilly seasonal weather." Manatee season runs Nov. 15 through March 31. Attracted by the warm water discharged from FPL's power plant, manatees "follow a watery travel route that mother manatees have taught to manatee calves." The mission of Manatee Lagoon? For FPL, Manatee Lagoon is "part of its environmental mission to not only educate the public about the relationship it has with these wonderful creatures, but to “inspire communities to preserve and protect Florida’s environment and wildlife for future generations.” |
