A Trip to PAMM:
The Perez Art Museum Miami

MIAMI_
As we looked forward to our first visit to the Perez Art Museum Miami, Pam was already jazzed.

"Look at those initials -- "PAMM," she said as we approached the building. "I like it already."

Before you even step inside, one thing is clear: The museum has one of the best locations in this city. Knight Plaza, which sits between the Perez and the Frost Museum of Science, fronts Biscayne Bay and the Port, against the dazzling background of the Miami skyline.

We both love to visit museums, and have lived in and visited places that boast world-class venues, like the Kimbell in Fort Worth, the Nasher in Dallas and the MOMA in New York. Each has its own unique style, and as lovers of modern art, the Perez has joined our list of great museums.Join us as we go on  our first tour...

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is a modern and contemporary art museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting international art of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Outside the entrance you can walk through this jungle of hanging blue plastic strands.
Pam bravely led the way.

A good place to start is the Information Desk, where you get tickets and learn about the museum
Picture
One of the first things you'll see are dozens of boats in every shape, size and color suspended from the ceiling, a work by Hew Locke entitled, "For Those in Peril on the Sea." As a kid, I loved to make models, but nothing like this!
Picture
Something we loved was the size of the galleries. The open spaces allow for just about any size art to be displayed.
Picture
As lovers of abstract art (Pam is an abstract artist in her own right),
this was one of our favorite pieces.
Picture
Viewed from a distance, you might never guess this wall-size piece is actually composed of thousands of individual wooden blocks,
which you can see in the
photo on the right.

One of the more intriguing exhibits is "while the dew is still on the roses," by Jamaican-born artist Ebony G. Patterson. Visitors enter the world of the "Night Garden," complete with chirping insects. It features video as well as large-scale, intricate tapestries created from beads, glitter and other mixed media elements. The exhibit will be at the Perez through May 5.

This exhibit is "Grids," by artist Lynne Golob Gelfman. One thing we liked are the takeaway fact sheets, in both English and Spanish, available about the artist and the works on display.
Picture
It's a broken piano, scattered pieces of china, tiny figurines and countless other objects large and small. Artist Liliana Porter's "Man with an axe and other brief situations" is one
of the museum's most complex works. You know every piece,
regardless of size, tells an important part of the whole story.

"The Bite"

There is a video on exhibit from Pedro Neves Marques -- "The Bite." A combination of science fiction and social commentary, it's a fascinating foray into "gender militarization and its transgression." The atmospheric music, produced by London-based musician Fraencis, keeps you waiting for a "jump scare" and definitely lends an eeriness to the visuals. With its mature themes, probably not for young ones.

There's a large gift shop -- and Pam never met a gift shop she didn't like, and a popular dining venue, Verde, which has both indoor and outdoor seating. Once you  see the view from the terrace, you'll want to be outdoors.

The museum's terrace and outdoor spaces is a work
of art in itself. We grabbed a chair and just chilled out.

I'm having a swinging time looking through the color panels and enjoying the swinging chairs in the Sculpture Garden.

We enjoyed a margarita pizza at Verde. The museum is open late on Thursdays, where they feature Happy Hour and frequently, music.

What a view from the Sculpture Garden

If you are just visiting or a resident, a trip to the Perez Art Museum Miami
should be on your "to do" list. We'll be coming back here soon!
