Valencia, CA - September 27, 2023 – After being closed for nearly three years, the Queen Mary and Cunard celebrated the reopening of “The Cunard Story” exhibition on Monday, September 25, with a dedication honoring Captain Inger Thorhauge, Cunard’s first female master mariner. Captain Thorhauge has been Master of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth prior to being named master designate to Cunard’s magnificent Queen Anne, due to go into service in May 2024. Captain Thorhauge brought the elegant Queen Elizabeth to Long Beach to rendezvous with the Queen Mary in 2019 and was also guest of honor at the opening of The Cunard Story that day. It is only fitting to honor her place as a trend-setting pioneer in the maritime world with her inclusion in “The Cunard Story.” Thorhauge was warmly welcomed by Managing Director Steve Caloca and Commodore Everette Hoard, the latter of whom presented her with an original medallion from the launch of the Queen Mary.
“When I learned a few months ago that the Queen Mary team wanted to rededicate ‘The Cunard Story’ to me, I was truly moved and very honored,” said Captain Thorhauge. “I had the good fortune of representing Cunard here on July 4th, 2019, when this wonderful room opened, and later that evening, I brought Queen Elizabeth into Long Beach harbor for a festive fireworks celebration.” “Thank you to the Queen Mary for always championing Cunard today, and for their continued passion to tell the story of our special relationship. “ “We are thrilled to have this exhibit reopen for our guests that come visit us on The Queen Mary, the hospitality capital of the West Coast,” said Steve Caloca, Managing Director of the Queen Mary. “We are delighted to showcase ‘The Cunard Story’ and honor Captain Inger Thorhauge, a maritime pioneer. Her connection to the Queen Mary and her role as Cunard's first female master mariner are a testament to our enduring relationship, and we are excited for our journey ahead with Cunard.” Captain Thorhauge is spending the next several months working in the Fincantieri shipyard in Margera, Italy, working closely with Cunard and the shipyard executives to bring the new ship to life.
