Both exhibitions are located at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach and are free and open to the public. “Verdant Bodies” will be on display in the Armory’s Montgomery Hall from Wednesday, Oct. 27 through Friday, Nov. 18, 2022. This exhibition offers insight into how makers in the art jewelry and metalsmithing fields interpret their environments. “Verdant Bodies” will explore topics such as ecology, evolution, species relationships, botanical, and cultural implications. The exhibition is organized by Alicia Jane Boswell, director of the Armory’s jewelry department and Maria Camera-Smith, resident artist. It is juried by contemporary jewelry artist, Diane Falkenhagen. The Armory invites the public to enjoy a free opening reception for the show on Friday, Oct. 28 (5 to 7 p.m.). “Radiant Nation” will be on display in the East Gallery from Friday, Nov. 4 through Friday, Dec. 16, 2022. The show features a collection of reimagined radiotherapy masks transformed by artists into vibrant, powerful forms of expression. This exhibition is inspired by artist and cancer survivor David Charlowe. In 2019, after surviving a bout with cancer, Charlowe asked several artists to repurpose nearly two dozen radiation masks. Cancer patients use the masks to receive radiation treatment around the head and neck area. By utilizing different mixed media techniques, the artists imagine unique, thoughtful concepts and attitudes to depict life changing events. Each repurposed artist mask symbolizes the fortitude needed to survive radiation and cancer treatments. The exhibition is sponsored in part by the nonprofit, Sari Center for Integrative Cancer Care. Presented by The Palm Beach Film Society, the event features 3-minute remakes of Hollywood hits created by complete amateurs. The audience then votes on the best of these awful films to take home bragging rights, and a prize. This year’s list of films include: The Blair Witch Project, Jurassic Park, Alien, Jaws, Willy Wonka, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Rambo: First Blood Part II, E.T. and Dodgeball. BUT WHAT’S A SWEDE? Indie film festivals have a rich history of showcasing amazing undiscovered talent, where Hollywood insiders troll for the next big thing, where A-list stars promote the small, labor-of-love projects they do between blockbusters. This is not the case with the annual swede fest™ palm beach. Instead, a “swede” is a no-budget, laughably bad remake of a hit Hollywood film. The term comes from the 2008 comedy, “Be Kind Rewind,” which started an underground sweding craze and resulted in the very first swede fest™ in Fresno. Next came swede fest™ tampa bay, and swede fest™ palm beach ushers in its 8th (ish) year on October 23, 2022. “Red Carpet” entry starts at 6:00 pm with screenings from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at the Kelsey Theater in Lake Park. COST: Tickets to the event are $12 per person and may be purchased at www.lakeparkblackbox.com. WHEN: Saturday, October 24 at 7:00 PM WHERE: The Kelsey Theater 700 Park Avenue, Lake Park WHO: The evening will be emceed comedic impresario, Mary Stucchi. The Palm Beach Film Society, a non-profit dedicated to promoting local film makers and film making in Palm Beach County is the presenting organization in partnership with the Lake Park Black Box Kelsey Theater, and sponsored by an anonymous donor. Since 1981, American Humane has celebrated Adopt-a-Dog Month each October to help the millions of dogs waiting in overcrowded shelters for the loving, forever homes that they deserve. “For thousands of years, dogs have been our best friends, our protectors and often our personal heroes, improving and even saving our lives,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane, and a South Florida resident. “That is why, each October, we encourage people to repay the favor by adopting a dog from a local shelter or rescue group. If you are able, open your heart and your home, and be a hero for a pup in need.” Throughout October, the public can visit AmericanHumane.org or follow American Humane’s social media channels to find resources and advice on preparing a home for a new canine companion. Pet owners are also encouraged to post their adoption stories to their own social media, tagging @AmericanHumane and using #AdoptADogMonth, to share how they found their perfect rescue or shelter pup and inspiring others to adopt a new furry friend of their own.
