(PRESS RELEASE)_[Riviera Beach, FL.] City of Riviera Beach and Riviera Beach CRA dedicated the Riviera Beach Tribute to Service Monument to our veterans, Gold Star families, and first responders to honor their service, sacrifice, and courage to our country and community. More than 100 people attended the ceremony at the Riviera Beach Marina Village in Riviera Beach. The Posting of Flags was done by the Riviera Beach Honor Guard, Mayor Ronnie L. Felder, City of Riviera Beach, gave the invocation, and State Senator Bobby Powell, Jr. and Palm Beach County Commissioner Mack Bernard dedicated the State of Florida flag and City of Riviera Beach flag during the ceremony. Taps was played by Nathan Goldin, a student from The Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts and a musical tribute was performed by Faith’s Place Center for Arts and Education. Commissioner KaShamba Miller-Anderson was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event. “This project has been one that I have been very passionate about in making sure we honor the veterans, Gold Star families, and our first responders in Riviera Beach. As the Gold Star daughter of Captain Joseph M. Berkson, US Army Ranger, who paid the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam, I am grateful to have built a relationship with so many of our military heroes,” said Lauren Berkson Hurst. Veterans Day as we know it was not always called “Veterans Day.” It began as a commemoration of Armistice Day, the day when fighting stopped during World War I. On June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. Later that year, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first “Veterans Day Proclamation.” Mayor Ronnie Felder from the City of Riviera Beach expressed his appreciation by saying, “To the men and women in uniform serving today and those who have served in the past, as the Mayor of the City of Riviera Beach, I express my appreciation for your service. We honor you today and every day. Our freedom and way of life is protected because of the critical service and heroism provided by our Veterans, First Responders, and Gold Star Members to our country and city. There is no way to thank you for everything you sacrifice for this but we have to try. So I take this opportunity, as we all should, to thank you all for your service both past and present.” Gold Star families are those loved ones that paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom while serving in the United States military. Our first responders within our community work diligently every day to serve and protect our citizens and keep us safe at their own risk. We applaud and pay tribute to the sacrifices of these brave men and women and their families.

CBD -- you see it everywhere these days: On signs, at retailers and in an increasing number of stores that sell it exclusively, including a handful right here in the North Palm Beach area. And what is CBD? CBD is short for cannabidiol, and is derived from hemp plants, a close relative to marijuana. Hold on -- isn't marijuana illegal? In most states, yes, but CBD, unlike the THC compound found in marijuana, doesn't induce a "high." Instead, it's touted as something to help you sleep, reduce anxiety and potentially ease chronic pain, and it is legal. While the jury is still out on how effective CBD is, millions already swear by it. Among the products which contain CBD are lotions, ointments, oils, gummies -- even cookies. It's the latter that led us to discover Dr. Norm's Wellness. While Dr. Norm's sells a full line of CBD products, they gained fame for their cookies, and thereby hangs a tale. California-based, the company, launched in 2017, is run by Jeff Koz and his sister, Roberta Koz Wilson (and yes, their brother is world famous jazz musician, Dave Koz ). And the cookies are based on recipes from their mother. In fact, the company pays homage to both their parents. Their father, Norman, was a medical doctor and the company's namesake, while their mother, Audrey, was a pharmacist and dedicated cookie baker. It all started with their Chocolate Chip Therapy Cookies, which you can now get -- as you can all their cookies -- both with and without CBD. As described on their website, "Using our mom’s famous recipe, this is the one we started our company with! These cookies are crunchy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. They’re generously filled with mini chocolate chips and finely chopped pecans with a surprise crunch from Heath Bar toffee bits." Their customers ate them up -- literally -- and asked for more. Also available: Peanut Butter Chocolate, Red Velvet, Snickerdoodle and Pecan Shortbread. Each cookie has 15 mg of CBD, and a bag of 10 costs $24.95, while the non-medicated version is $14.95. In October, they announced the "world's first cannabis-infused" Hanukkah cookie, the limited edition “Heavenly Hanukkah Cookies,” and are looking to market a holiday sugar cookie as well. Beyond cookies, they offer a line of products that include topicals, tinctures and even items for your pets. But aside from the products, Dr. Norm's is a great resource for learning about CBD and its use for health and wellness. There are sections of the site like "Know Your Dose" that offers straight-forward information on how to determine the right CBD dosage for you, as well as a wonderful CBD FAQ that covers all facets of its use. You can also download a "Beginner's Guide to CBD." While taking CBD is considered generally safe, it's always a good idea to check with your doctor if you are taking prescription drugs for any possible interactions. Coming soon, we're going to order some cookies and post a more detailed review. Stay tuned, and stay mellow! |
