To conclude the first week of Palm Beach Restaurant Week -- which is actually more like two weeks -- friends Bill and Eileen joined us once more for a dining trifecta. Our third stop was Batch New Southern Kitchen and Tap, located at 223 Clematis in downtown West Palm Beach. As their website notes, Batch offers a "modern casual dining restaurant and bar featuring a scratch-cooked, locally sourced new southern culinary menu and garden-to-glass cocktails." We were there Thursday night, which coincides with Clematis by Night, a weekly celebration of music and food. Our outdoor high-top table put us right in the middle of the action, so to speak, as tricked-out cars cruised up and down Clematis, testing the decibel levels of their speaker systems. The Batch Restaurant Week special was a $30 dinner that included appetizer, entree and dessert. We started with a cocktail while we made our selections. Pam and I went with a House Made Gin and Tonic ($12), while Bill ordered the Toasted Pecan Whiskey Sour ($12). Eileen started with a Cucumber Crush ($12), but she found it a bit too much cucumber, so she switched to the whiskey sour. UPDATE: The Redemption Whiskey pairing dinner at City Cellar on August 24 has been cancelled. Johnson Elementary School 1000 Crestwood Blvd. N in Royal Palm Beach (33411) On behalf of the school, the check from Mounts Botanical Garden was accepted by PTO President Julie Highsmith. Pine Jog Environmental Education Center’s Green Schools Recognition Program honors public and private schools in Palm Beach and Martin counties that use ongoing “green” programs, projects, and practices to instill a culture of environmental stewardship and sustainability in their classrooms, on their school grounds, and throughout their communities. Mounts Botanical Garden is one of more than 20 community partners in the Green Schools Recognition Program, and Mounts board member Molly Sims participated as a Green Schools ambassador, judge, and advisor. Our march through Restaurant Week continued with a lunch-time visit to Henry's Palm Beach, where we joined by our partners-in-food, Bill and Eileen. Open a little more than a year, Henry's Palm Beach is the second off-site restaurant operated by The Breakers (named after Henry Flagler, who founded the famous resort). Located in Palm Beach on Royal Poinciana Way, at Via Flagler by The Breakers, it's bright and airy, with a casual elegance that we found inviting. Our friendly hostess seated us at a corner table flanked by large, arched windows that afforded views of both the via and the street. The Restaurant Week lunch special ($25) featured your choice of an entree and dessert. Entrees included:
Eileen wanted to try the Tavern Twin Patty Burger, but opted to pass when she learned it only came medium or medium well. So she joined Pam and I, choosing the chicken sandwich, while Bill went with the Cuban. For dessert:
This time, Pam went for the key lime pie while the rest of us got the mud pie. Our takeaways on the food:
The chicken sandwich was a little disappointing. While the bread was soft and delicious, the panko chicken came out hard and difficult to cut. The manager graciously offered to replace it, and we did get a second piece of chicken that was better. Bill reported his Cuban sandwich was excellent, as were the french fries that came with all our meals -- crispy and just right. As for the desserts, those were a total home run. You have never seen a piece of pie as big or elegantly made as their Mississippi Mud Pie. Honestly, the four of us could have shared one portion. Pam's key lime was also a hit (and when she dropped a blueberry on her white dress, the staff came to the rescue with club soda and lemon). Other observations: We loved the two-color cloth napkins -- made us feel special. The service was great -- friendly and attentive without being intrusive, with frequent refills for our iced tea. Kudos to the staff. If you haven't been here yet, Restaurant Week is a great time to visit. They are also offered a special three-course dinner for $55. We also learned they have a great Happy Hour each weekday from 3-5 pm, with half-off drinks and appetizers. We will definitely be back to check that out. Palm Beach Restaurant Week is officially underway, and we celebrated by asking our friends, Bill and Eileen, to join us for dinner at one of our favorite dining spots, the Leopard Lounge and Restaurant, at Palm Beach's Chesterfield Hotel.
Aside from the food, the restaurant itself is a feast for the eyes. Gold fixtures, leopard prints, black lacquer walls and a hand-painted ceiling evoke an age long past. It also features a tropical outdoor patio, where we were tempted to dine under clear skies and a bright moon, until the hostess told us the mosquitoes were out in full force. Maybe next time. Inside, we had our choice of tables. Only two other couples were there that night, so social distancing was no problem. For the record, all hotel personnel were masked, which we appreciated. For Restaurant Week, the Leopard Lounge was offering a three-course dinner for $45. To begin, we all ordered cocktails while we finalized our menu choices. Diners can choose from three starters:
Among us, we tried all three. The crab cake got raves, but so did the salad and the shrimp cocktail, which featured three large shrimp. The Entrée choices were:
This round was a split decision; three of us chose the salmon, while one went with the filet. Again, both were delicious. In fact, the filet was judged to be "one of the best I've ever had." The mashed potatoes were also a hit. And then came what's always my favorite part of any meal, dessert. Two choices here:
Another split decision, with the majority opting for the brulee and one going with the brownie. You can't go wrong with either one. Bottom line: We enjoyed great food in a great setting, and Restaurant Week is off to a great start! One thing to note: The gratuity is included with the bill. Leopard Lounge and Restaurant is located at 363 Cocoanut Row on Palm Beach.
