(PRESS RELEASE)_(West Palm Beach, FL – January 11, 2024) The League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County (LWVPBC) is inviting friends and supporters to another fascinating Hot Topic Luncheon next month at the Hilton Palm Beach Airport, located at 150 Australian Avenue in West Palm Beach 33406. Wednesday, February 21 – 11 am to 1 pm Election Issues Roundtable With another heated election year underway, the League will host informative presentations by leading experts on three critical issues:
Brent Schillinger, MD Co-chair of the League of Women Voters Palm Beach County Healthcare Committee, past president of the Palm Beach County Medical Society, and currently chairs its Opioid Healthcare Response Initiative. He also serves as chair of the Florida Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank that focuses on the fiscal impact of education, affordable housing, food supply, and health care issues. He holds clinical academic appointments at the medical schools of Nova Southeastern University, Florida Atlantic University, and the University of Miami. Dr. Schillinger will focus on the status of healthcare in Florida with regard to reproductive rights, the state’s refusal to accept Medicaid, healthcare access, uninsured children, misinformation/disinformation on vaccinations, and other topics under consideration during the 2024 Legislative Session.
Deputy Director of the Florida Immigration Coalition Dr. Bozzetto will discuss immigration and democracy, including the expansion of the electorate through naturalization and voter registration, political education of new Americans, the potentials for strengthening American democracy through immigrant engagement, and the negative impact of Florida Senate Bill 1718 which went into effect last July.
Co-Chair of the Palm Beach County Voting Rights Coalition and the Palm Beach County Election Program During the 2020 presidential election, Palm Beach County was the epicenter of hyper-partisan activity that threatened voters’ desire and ability to vote. With the Florida State Legislature now considering even more restrictive voting requirements, Renchin will discuss the Coalition’s ongoing work to inform people about pending legislation and litigation; and also efforts to recruit, train, schedule and support nonpartisan Election Protection poll monitors to assist all voters to vote.
