January 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 Watercolor at the Garden with Carl Stoveland Tuesdays, 10 am to 12:30 pm $15 for members; $20 for nonmembers (includes full Garden admission). Classes are nonrefundable. Registration is required; class size is limited to 25 adults. Join artist Carl Stoveland and share the love of art and nature with fellow art enthusiasts. This class is for adults only. Qi Gong (pronounced chee-gong) is an ancient Chinese exercise and healing technique. The exercises include simple, slow movements (which mimic nature), meditation, and focused breathing—similar to Tai Chi but less structured. The main objective of the practice of Tai Chi is to magnify, strengthen and encourage the flow of the internal energy, the “chi”. When the “chi” flows throughout the body, one experiences over-all health, rejuvenation, and internal joy. This Tai Chi class is based on Sun Style Tai Chi which combines Qi Gong and Tai Chi. Visitors must show proof of residency for reduced-fee entry. The $5 admission will go directly to support children’s programming at Mounts Botanical Garden. Botanicals can be adapted to many styles—Asian, modern, shabby chic, classic. Come learn the different methods about this old and cherished craft from Judith Olney, who has taught English literature at universities in Africa and the United States and is the author of the bestselling cookbook The Joy of Chocolate. Each workshop of this three-class series will cover a different aspect of this cherished art form. + January 25, Class 1: A Victorian take on Botanicals. Introduction to materials used. We will pick specimens from the garden and learn methods of antiquing and mounting. Each participant will be given four heavy stock papers to begin their collection. Expect a "cuppa" tea and bite or two of classic British tea pastries. + February 1, Class 2: An Asian take on Botanicals. We will mount specimens and learn ways to enhance our botanicals with more complicated images. Participants will start a wabi sabi style masterpiece and have a chance to play with chops and sumi ink. Perhaps a bite of traditional Asian tarts and matcha green tea would not come amiss. + February 8, Class 3: Creating a whole scene from nature. Participants will start the background for their own nature snapshot. We will look at samples of shabby chic, modern, Scandinavian style botanicals, and do a "show and tell" for all six samples we have created. Note: Students should wear clothes suitable for crafting and wandering around the gardens. Take an exciting journey inside the creative mind of world-renowned artist Deborah Bigeleisen as she talks about her layered insights into painting nature. Having traveled extensively to botanical gardens throughout North America, flowers have been her inspiration and her muse since childhood. She traces the evolution of her artistic vision from painting the Rembrandt-like portraits of illuminated white roses that launched her career, to more conceptual visions rooted in the principles of fractals, to surreal dreamlike interpretations. Enjoy hearing about the common threads that weave through her former career as a textile print designer and as a fine art painter, and the serendipitous events that have impacted her life, challenged her vision, and transformed her work. This gentle class is designed to encourage students to strengthen their bodies and cultivate the quieting of the mind and senses. Traditional postures are practiced while emphasizing alignment, core strength, flexibility, and balance, as well as breath control. Each unique class concludes with a silent or guided meditation.
