By GERRY BARKER North Palm Beach Life Photos by Gerry Barker Cards, candy and gifts aside, what goes better with Mother's Day than brunch? That's why Pam and I set a course to the Embassy Suites Deerfield Beach Resort and Spa to experience their Mother's Day Brunch for ourselves. The resort, which recently celebrated a multi-million dollar renovation (read about it here), featured a lavish brunch buffet at their Beach Terrace restaurant that celebrated mothers with an array of culinary choices and live music. Priced at $75 for adults, and $35 for children under 12, the buffet also included bottomless Bloody Marys, mimosas and Bellinis.. Our window-side table for two included bright pink napkins and a view of the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean just outside – not a bad setting for celebrating a special day, or any day for that matter. For starters, our server, Ben, brought us two Bellini's, which for you cocktail historians, is a blend of white peach puree and Prosecco that had its debut at Harry's Bar in Venice, Italy. Having been to Harry's Bar and had their Bellini, trust me – this one was better by far. Next stop was the buffet, which featured a cooking station where a chef was preparing seared scallops and shrimp, along with eggs benedict and a carving station where you could get slices of roast beef and sausage. Nearby were oysters on the half shell, red velvet waffles and a salad bar. Guests also had their choice of deli meats, cheese, fruit and soup as well. At the self-serve station, we couldn't resist the golden fried chicken – the large portions were almost a meal in itself. Add a side of mashed potatoes and vegetable medley, and there was no more room on the plate. As someone who considers himself something of a fried chicken connoisseur, this chicken was among the best I've had – tender, juicy and full of flavor. Other buffet choices included roasted salmon and tortellini. As a guitarist played, we of course had to peruse the desserts, which included cupcakes, carrot cake and all matter of chocolate delights. Our selections were just as delicious as the rest of our meal.
Altogether, it was what Mother's Day in South Florida should be: Great food and drink in a seaside setting. And not bad for the Dads, either, who got to tag along.
