(PRESS RELEASE)_(Washington, DC, February 10, 2022) — February 10, 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the spy exchange between CIA U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers and Soviet KGB Colonel Rudolph Abel at the Glienicker Bridge in Potsdam, Germany. To commemorate this event and teach future generations about the Cold War, the pilot’s son Francis Gary Powers, Jr., Mary Ellen Donovan Fuller the daughter of attorney James Donovan who negotiated the exchange, and the leading expert on Rudolph Abel Vin Arthey discussed Cold War history with retired KGB Intelligence Officer Svetlana Tumanov and Kirill Gorshenin of Pravda.ru.

The program, hosted by retired KGB Intelligence Officer Svetlana Tumanov and Kirill Gorshenin from Pravda.ru, explores Cold War tensions, an overview of the U-2 Incident, and the ultimate exchange of Francis Gary Powers and Frederick Pryor for Rudolph Abel in February 1962. The program can be viewed by clicking on this https://youtu.be/vWTqACEmqcU.

According to Francis Gary Powers, Jr., “This program will help the current generation learn more about the Cold War and in particular the U-2 Incident, and spy exchange at the Glienicker Bridge as recently depicted in Steven Spielberg’s movie “Bridge of Spies.” It was cold, dark, and foggy on the morning of the exchange. Two agents were on each side of the bridge along with their CIA and KGB escorts anxiously awaiting confirmation to proceed with the swap. Tensions were high, but the US and Russians were able to negotiate a mutually beneficial outcome.”

According to Mary Ellen Fuller Donovan, “My father worked behind the scenes with Russian and East German officials for many months to secure the release of Powers for Abel in February 1962. However, he never gave up on getting Frederick Pryor, a graduate student accused of spying in East Germany, included as part of the exchange. As a result, both Powers and Pryor were released in exchange for Rudolph Abel.”

According to Vin Arthey, “I have been researching the life and work of William Fisher, AKA Rudolf Abel, for many years. When working on my book “Abel” I talked at length with Fisher’s daughter Evelyn and with many others involved in this espionage drama. This program will provide a unique insight into a key part of Cold War history.”

Powers To Be Inducted Into Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame

Francis Gary Powers, the central figure in an international clash between the United States and the then-Soviet Union in 1960, when his U2 spy plane was downed on a secret mission, is to be posthumously inducted into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame on Nov. 13.

Powers will receive the honor at a dinner and induction ceremony of the Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society to be held at Shannon Airport in Fredericksburg. He will be honored together with Randy Burdette of Stafford County, former chief of the state department of aviation, and retired NASA astronaut Leland Devon Melvin, who played a major role in the Space Shuttle program.

Powers, grew up in Southwest Virginia and learned to fly at Lonesome Pine Airport in Wise County. His life was centered on aviation after she enlisted in the Air Force and started a career flying jet fighters in 1952.

He was recruited by the CIA to fly the U2 spy plane in 1956 and continued those sensitive and dangerous secret assignments until May 1, 1960, when his aircraft was downed by an anti-aircraft missile over Sverdlovsk. Amazingly, Powers managed to survive the harrowing emergency, in the moments following his machine being blown out of the sky, parachuting safely to earth.

That was only the start of what became a major international incident involving the two Cold War adversaries, as Powers was put on trial by the Soviets, convicted and handed a lengthy prison sentence. He served only until Feb. 1962 however, when he was successfully repatriated in an exchange of prisoners for Russian spy Col. Rudolf Abel.

Powers, who continued flying in several capacities for a number of years after his repatriation, died in the crash of a news helicopter he was flying in Encino, CA, in 1977.

Several years after his death, Powers was honored with the National Defense Service Medal, the Prisoner of War Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross and the CIA Director’s Medal for “Extreme Fidelity and Courage.” In addition, the Air Force awarded him the Silver Star for valor during his Soviet incarceration.

The Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society has cited three men for extraordinary achievement in the aviation and aerospace realm, including posthumous honors for Francis Gary Powers, whose flights over the former Soviet Union in the U2 spy plane blew up into a major international dispute when he was downed by a missile in 1960. Powers survived the incident, which sparked a major conflict between the United States and Soviet governments and threw fuel on the Cold War for years.

Gary Powers grew up in Wise, VA, where he learned to fly at the Lonesome Pine Airport in Wise County and went on to a career in the United States Air Force. He flew Air Force jets until being recruited by the CIA to fly the U2 spy plane in 1956 on dangerous and super-secret overflights of the Soviet Union.

He survived being shot down on one of these flights on May 1, 1960 by a high-reaching SA-2 anti-aircraft missile, only to be captured and sentenced to 10 years in a Soviet prison. Ultimately, Powers was freed in February 1962 in an exchange for convicted Soviet spy Col. Rudolph Abel. The exchange was depicted in the 2015 film, “Bridge of Spies.”

His biography, “Operation Overflight,” provides his own, riveting account of the U2 incident and was well received.

Powers continued flying after his return to the United States, testing U2 planes for Lockheed-the builder-only to die in the crash of a news helicopter he was flying in Los Angeles in 1977.

Powers is to be inducted into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame Nov. 13 in Fredericksburg.

The banquet and ceremonies for the three nominees will take place for the first time this year at Shannon Airport.
