(PRESS RELEASE)_(Palm Beach County, FL – January 25, 2024) The Loxahatchee Group of the Sierra Club Florida Chapter today announced that it has given the nonprofit organization’s prestigious 2024 Pine Tree Award to longtime volunteer Glenn Laufer of Lake Worth Beach, FL. The special award honors outstanding Group Leadership of exceptional benefit to the local Sierra Club in any of the following areas: management, inspiration and encouragement of volunteers, fundraising, and/or membership. “Glenn Laufer has been a member of the Loxahatchee Group of the Sierra Club since 2003, and a volunteer for more than two decades with our Palm Beach County Inspiring Connections Outdoors (PBCICO),” says Linda Smithe, Executive Committee Chair.
“Meant to expose children to the natural world who don’t have such opportunities, PBCICO currently partners with four organizations: the Migrant Education Program of Palm Beach County, the City of Greenacres Youth Program, The Bridges of Lake Worth West program, and the Palm Beach Pace Center for Girls,” she adds. Laufer also serves on the local Sierra Club committee that plans the annual Thanks and Giving Celebration—which has sold out every year under his leadership and raises thousands of dollars to fund youth outings, scholarships and other conservation programs. Since 2021, he has also served on the organization’s Executive Committee and chairs all General Meetings, whether in-person or via Zoom. “Many of our volunteers donate their time to our group after they retire, but Glenn Laufer has been consistently active for many years, stepping up to take on job after job, all the while raising a family and working a busy full-time job—he truly serves this year’s Pine Tree Award,” concludes Smithe.
